1. a) Cite the two desirable characteristics of glasses. b) On the basis of this comparison, (30%)
select the material most suitable for the cookware? c) Cite one reason why ceramic
materials are, in general, harder yet more brittle than metals?
2. a) On the basis of the structures, sketch repeat unit structures for the following (30%)
polymers: (i) polychlorotrifluoroethylene, and (ii) poly(vinyl alcohol) b) Make
comparisons of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers (i) on the basis of
mechanical characteristics upon heating, and (ii) according to possible molecular
structures.
3. For a polymer-matrix fiber-reinforced composite, (a) List three functions of the matrix (40%)
phase. (b) Compare the desired mechanical characteristics of matrix and fiber phases.
(c) Cite two reasons why there must be a strong bond between fiber and matrix at their
interface d) Briefly describe resin transfer moulding, compression moulding, and
vacuum infunsion fabrication processes; cite the advantages and disadvantages of
each.
