Heat Detection
Monitoring Cable Trays or Trenches could be very tricky because of their nature. Normally cable trays goes
over long distances and are mostly in remote locations. Despite it is not much discussed, one can not
disagree that cable trays are the backbone of any kind of high-end facility or plant because a minor cable
failure can cause significant loss of plant, downtime of production, and in severe situations even risk to life.
Utilizing AP Sensing’s Distributed Temperature Sensing (Fiber Optic Linear Heat Detection) comprised of an
interrogator unit and robust sensor cable, our system continuously monitors the temperature in the cable
trays for smoldering fires mostly caused by abnormal hotspots developing along these cables and this early
detection of the hotspot along the cable trays will save the plant/facility from significant equipment loss,
downtime and potential human injury.
It is comprised of an interrogator unit and a robust passive fiber optic sensor cable which provides a
continuous temperature profile over the length of the sensing cable. In Fire industry, it is often known as
Fiber Optic Linear Heat Detection (LHD) system.
The passive sensor cable is always advantageous because it is immune to dirt, dust, humidity, corrosive materials
and most importantly to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Placement of these sensor cable can vary from
project to project. However, below are some recommendations to lay these sensor cable on cable tray
arrangement.
It also provides a unique and flexible alarm zoning concept which further allows individual sections with
different alarm criteria (sensitivity) on the same sensor cable run.
