6 Reflect and discuss

Look back at the sentences you discussed in the first part of the lesson. Have you changed your mind
about whether you agree or disagree with any of the statements? Explain your ideas in pairs.

7 Activate
Imagine you have successfully interviewed for a job with a company that requires you to work remotely
at least several days a week. You have some concerns about this arrangement. Write three to five
questions to ask your new employer about how they handle remote working, using vocabulary from the
exercises in this lesson.

Example: What pitfalls have you experienced with remote workers in the past, and how have you
addressed these issues?
Roleplay a conversation with a manager from the company. One student the employee - will ask the
questions they wrote, and the other the employer will answer the questions. Try to use vocabulary
from the lesson in the answers as well.

Then change roles.

1- Warm-up

5 mins. Focus attention on the photograph and elicit that the man could be working remotely (not in a traditional
office, but maybe working from home or in a café or library). Ask students if they ever work remotely or if they
would like to. Then set up the discussion in pairs and allow a few minutes for students to speak. Conduct a brief
class feedback session by asking a few students which sentences they and their partner disagreed about and why.

2- Reading for the main idea

5 mins. Students will read the article twice. First, they work alone to skim-read the article to get a general idea
of content and organisation. Go over the task before they start and set a time limit of 3 minutes skimming is an
important study skill and supports strong performance in exams. Check answers quickly with the whole class.
ANSWERS: extra topic - Benefits to employers

3- Reading for detail

10 mins. Set up the second reading activity, where students place missing sentences into the text. They can work
alone and then check answers in pairs, before you check with the whole class. Ask students to explain why they
have placed each sentence in a gap, using the context of the article.
1. d 2. e 3. a 4. c 5. b

4- Vocabulary I

7.5 minutes. In this exercise, students will define individual words from the article. They will activate this language
later in the lesson. Encourage students to use the context of the article to help them figure out the meaning of the
individual words. Students can work alone, and then check answers in pairs before checking with the whole class.
Make sure students can pronounce the target language the stressed syllable has been underlined.

6. a 7. c 8. f 9. g 10. d

5- Vocabulary II

lesson. Students can work in pairs to choose the best answer a-c, before checking with the whole class.

6- Reflect and discuss

10 mins. In pairs, students recall and revise their previous statements, in response to the content of the article.
Encourage use of language from the vocabulary exercises where appropriate.

7- Activate

15 mins. In this stage, students respond to both the content of the article and activate new vocabulary. Go over
all the instructions first, so students can understand the flow of the task. Students can then work alone for five
minutes to write their questions. Monitor students' work to ensure correct use of target language. Then place
students in pairs to role-pay a Q&A session. Encourage the use of vocabulary from the lesson in the responses to
the questions as well. If time is short, limit the number of questions each student can ask. VARIATION: students
work in pairs to formulate their questions, and then split up to work in new pairs to roleplay the Q&A session.
