Technical Description - System components

The system consists of two different stages and operates during the uptake of the ballast water. In
the first stage, an automatic self –cleaning backwashing filter with 40 microns basket which ensures
separation efficiency of particles and organisms with 40 μm is used. The remaining viable organisms
are eliminated with in situ production of chlorine up to 6 mg/L (TRO) from advanced electrolytic
cells.

Certification

3.1 IMO type & Class approval

The system holds IMO Type Approval from the Greek Administration since January 2015 and LR
Class Type Approval.

3.2 USCG
On October 18th 2017, ERMAFIRST FIT system received USCG approval, for which it filed an
application in April 2017.

1At sea water conditions

2Auxiliary equipment power consumption (control panels, suction pump, motor starter panel, FW
module) is included in system’s total required power

4.2 Electrolyzers
Electrolyzer unit is able to produce free active chlorine (TRO), used for the disinfection of ballast
water, by electrolysis of sea water. A TRO concentration of up to 6 mg/L as Cl2 is produced for the
sufficient disinfection of ballast water according to D2 standards of the BWMC. The electrolyzers
consist of a set of special coated electrodes which are mounted in cylindrical housing. The cells’
electrodes are supplied with low voltage direct current by a sufficient power supply. The power
applied on the electrodes is driven by the concentration of TRO measured by the TRO sensors
installed downstream of them.

4.3 Transformer/ Rectifier (T/R) Unit

It’s the direct current power supply of the electrolyzers. The device transforms alternating current to
low voltage direct current and is controllable via communication interface. It consists of one (1) or
additional power modules, up to ten (10), which together with a control module form a complete
Transformer Rectifier unit.

The connection of the unit with the cells is being achieved with adequate capacity cables or bus
bars. The electrical connection could be either parallel or in series.

4.4 TRO sensors

The purpose of the Total Residual Oxidants or TRO sensors (TRO1, TRO2) is to constantly measure Cl2
(TRO) in the ballast water during treatment and also during discharge. During ballasting the reading
regulates the applied current on the electrodes. At the de- ballasting the reading drives the dosing
rate of the neutralizing agent to maintain the MADC of 0.1 mg/L. For accurate measurements, the
water being analysed should be free of coarse material, which in the case of ERMA FIRST FIT treated
water, is free of particles larger than 40 microns.

TRO1 measures TRO during ballasting and during de-ballasting, before neutralization stage.

TRO2 measures TRO after the neutralization stage, prior but close to the overboard discharge point
for ballast pumps and prior to discharge G2 Sampling port to ensure 0.1 mg/l MADC.

4.5 Flow meter

The flow meter (F) is the device which measures the flow rate of liquid medium at the outlet of the
BWTS. The flow meter (F) used is of electromagnetic type. This is the most reliable device for sea-
water applications and installation on board of vessels where special conditions, like vibrations,
exist.

The electromagnetic flow meter consists of a non-ferromagnetic measuring tube with an

electrically insulating inner surface, and magnetic coils and electrodes that are arranged on the
periphery of the tube and are in contact with the process liquid through the tube wall.

4.6 Monitoring and control auxiliary equipment

The BWTS incorporates a number of auxiliary equipment used for the monitoring and control of its
operation. During ballasting the following auxiliary equipment are used.

• Flow switch (FS) installed on the electrolyzers’ outlet. The flow switch is used as a safety
measure for the operation of the electrolyzers. This switch sends analog 4-20 mA signal to
the BWTS control which regulates the power supply on the cells and prevent damage of the
electrodes.

• Temperature sensor (T) installed on the electrolyzers’ outlet. The temperature sensor is used
either as an additional safety measure of the electrolyser when the high temperature limit is
reached or as an indication of possible electrode coatings wear.

• Pressure sensors (PI) installed prior to filter inlet and after electrolyzer’s outlet. The pressure
sensors which transmit an analog 4-20 mA signal, are used as an additional safety measure
in order to indicate out of range pressure.

4.7 Fresh water Module

In cases where the Salinity Meter (SMD) detects salinity at the intake water lower than 0.9 PSU then
an attention alarm is activated and the operator should activate the fresh water operation. During
this operation a dedicated Sea Water Dosing Pump (SWP) is automatically activated for seeding
sea water from APT at the ballast pump intake. The flow rate of the SWP ensures BWTS intake water
salinity > 0.9 PSU. This mode is automatically deactivated when the SMD detects uptake water
salinity > 0.9 PSU.

4.8 Clean-In-Place Module (Optional item)

This is installed in cases where low flow operation is conducted frequently in order to avoid
calcareous deposits on the electrodes and keep the efficiency. Electrolytic cell is isolated via
relevant valves and citric acid recirculates from a dedicated plastic tank for about 2.5 hours. This is
conducted every 250 hrs or one year, whichever comes first.
