Question :

1. What is semantics to your understanding?

2. What makes semantics important?

3. Is there any relevance between semantics and English language teaching?

Answer :

1. Semantics is the science of meaning or meaning. Semantics in English is called

"meaning". Semantics usually deals with two other aspects: syntax, the formation of
complex symbols from simpler symbols, and pragmatic, practical use of symbols by the
people in certain contexts. Semantics is a branch of linguistics.

2. For a student majoring in language, the importance of learning semantics is that it makes
it easier to analyze language (both the language he has learned, the language he has not
learned, and the language he will learn), it is easier to learn the meaning in language, then
if the student wants to become a teacher, he can makes it easier for him to explain the
meaning of certain words to prospective students. By understanding and mastering
semantics, it will make it easier and smooth in the next language learning, for example in
studying pragmatics, because basically these two language fields are interconnected and
support each other.

3. Semantics with teaching English are related. Because semantics can equip teachers with
the ability to analyze aspects of the meaning of language which are useful in anticipating
various possible obstacles faced in English learning activities. In teaching English,
semantics also has an important effect on the use of the meaning of the language used by
students. Therefore, I think these two things have relevance.
