Toussaint L’Ouverture’s Timeline.

1791, The slaves rose in revolt. They burned the sugar cane in the fields and kill hundreds of
slave owners.

1802, Napolean decided to reclaim the rich sugar plantations of Saint Dominique. In January
1802, 16000 French troops landed in Saint Dominique to get rid of Toussaint.

After Toussaint’s death, slaves continued to fight the French for freedom.

1804, After the French surrendered (First black colony to free themselves from European
control), Dessalines proclaimed himself to be an emperor of Haiti and ordered to kill white
people, 3000-5000 were killed.

1820, Dessalines was assassinated in the revolt. Haiti became an independent republic.

Ideas 
- Colonization = the act of taking over or controlling a group of ​indigenous people of an
area. This idea was present when England.
- Slavery = A social class that is being controlled and treated unfairly by another person
with a higher social class.
- Plantation = Natural ingredients being collected by labor. This may include coffee,
tobacco, and sugar.
- Racism = Antagonizing at a different race

Social instability 
- French colonization: Oppressed and treated like slaves (European,

- The slaves are not happy and they want to fight back

- Most people are uneducated and mostly unskilled. 
- The slaves are freed and created a constitution. 
- Haiti signed an agreement with the French to pay the 
reparations. 
- After the French surrendered, Dessalines ordered the mass 
killings of the remaining white population in Haiti (3,000-5,000 
people were killed). 
- Haiti became an independent republic. 
- Haiti is the first black colony to free itself from European 
control. 
- The slaves burned the sugar cane in fields and killed hundreds 
of slave owners..
