Improved Durability for Retreadability
After studying tire deformation and the physics of stress distribution in a loaded
rolling tire, Sumitomo developed a new way of looking at tire design. A tire under
the stress of speed and load will experience internal pressure and heat build up
which alters the footprint shape. This change causes uneven wear, reduced
casing strength and reduced structural durability - especially after the 2nd and
3rd recaps. Even at today’s higher speed limits, C.V.S.T. ensures long even wear,
excellent stability, and multiple retreads.

The “Contour Variance Stabilization Theory” has been incorporated into the
design of many of our medium truck radials, controlling casing stress throughout
the life of original tread and multiple retreads. Our tough inner liner and special
anti-ozone sidewall rubber compound keep the casing in service for many years.

The computer designed tread pattern and special compounds

in all operating conditions. Sumitomo has balanced the best of
rib and block pattern designs to provide drivers with tough,
durable performance in city and regional usage.

 DRIVE AXLE ALIGNMENT
Drive axle alignment is very important. Tandem
drive axles that are not parallel to each other have
a definite effect on steer-tire wear.

Fig. 1 shows a model of a tandem-drive axle

tractor with both drive axles in proper alignment. In
this case, the driver simply steers the truck straight
ahead and neither fast wear nor irregular wear

A more severe case is shown in Fig. 2. Here, the

drive axles are neither parallel to each other nor
perpendicular to the chassis centerline. The drive
axle tires are trying to force the vehicle to turn left
and the driver must compensate by turning to the
right. This will result in fast and irregular wear and,
as recent tests have shown, in a much more

indicate that the steer tire on the same side of the
truck, on which the drive tires are closest together,
will wear into an out-of-round condition.

 VEHICLE ALIGNMENT
For best vehicle handling and tire life, proper vehicle alignment is required. For best readings on
alignment settings, vehicle should be loaded. However, many vehicle manufacturers also have
tolerances for alignment settings when vehicle is unloaded. Before starting, correct any air pressure
differences in tires and make sure vehicle is on a level surface, with brakes off.

DRIVE AXLE RECOMMENDATIONS

Irregular wear patterns on steer axle tires may come from misaligned drive axles and trailer axles, not
to mention the obvious loss of tire mileage, vehicle handling, and fuel economy. Drive and trailer axle
alignment is normally set before steer axle corrections are made.

Drive axles should be aligned in the following manner:

1. Position the drive axles perpendicular to the chassis center line.
2. For tandem drives, the drive axles should be positioned parallel to one another.

Trailer axles should be aligned to the center line of trailer pin at the start of settings.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR LONG TIRE LIFE

Inspect tire conditions regularly. Look for signs of sidewall bulges, cracking, cuts and stone retention in grooves. If you have a
question or concern, consult your Sumitomo Tire dealer.

Tire Replacement
By Department of Transportation regulations, any trailer or drive axle tire is to be removed from service when there are only
2/32nds of tread left (or 4/32nds on steer axle tires) in any tread groove. Sumitomo advises that, as a rule of thumb, tires
should be removed at 4/32nds remaining tread to allow better casing recovery for retreading.

Proper Tire Inflation

It is advisable to check all tire inflation pressures before each trip, or at least weekly. The best time to obtain accurate readings
is when tires are cool to the touch, before any distance is traveled. Consult the air pressure guidelines in this book, refer to the
tire sidewall, or pressure charts from the Tire and Rim Association. When speeds are constantly above 70 m.p.h., it is
recommended to use maximum air pressure for good wear and performance. For safety and ease of checking air pressure,
metal flow-through valve caps should be used.

Tire Rotation
Because of vehicle specifications (wheelbase, horsepower, gears, suspension) and terrain, most tires used on drive axles wear
faster on the rear drive axle than on the front drive axle. By cross rotating rear axle tires to front axle, and front axle tires
moved to rear axle position, wear can be equally controlled on all drive positions, resulting in longer miles in service.

Practice Good Driving Habits

• Avoid fast starts and sudden stops. • Avoid using only trailer brakes to slow vehicle.
• Avoid potholes and debris (safely) if possible. • Beware of curb location and avoid scuffing sidewall.
• Observe a safe speed limit, using posted speeds as guidelines.

RETREAD CASING WARRANTY

In addition to the limited warranty extended to all Sumitomo tires, as stated above,
if any Sumitomo radial truck tire casing becomes unserviceable or cannot be
retreaded because of a workmanship related condition, a casing allowance will be
granted.
Every Sumitomo radial tire casing (except the ST758 and ST748A) will be
warranted to the first purchaser during its first and second retread life for a period
of four (4) years from the date of manufacture.
The ST758 and ST748A are warranted to the first purchaser for five (5) years on
unlimited numbers of retreads.
For any casing which becomes unserviceable due to a workmanship condition
during the first or second retread life and before expiration of that four (4) year
period, or unlimited retreads before the expiration of five (5) years for the ST758
and ST748A , Sumitomo Tire will give a casing allowance, as set forth in the
following table across from the tire size of the unserviceable tire, toward the
purchase of a new Sumitomo radial truck tire.
Under no circumstances will credit be given if the tire has worn down less than
2/32” of tread depth, in any groove on the tire.
EXCLUSIONS...CONTINUED
Nor does this limited warranty apply to any tires:
• Marked “Blemish” or “NA” (no adjustment).
• With the Serial Number cut or buffed.
• Purchased or used outside the United States.
• With less than 2/32” remaining tread in any groove.
• Retreaded with less than 2/32” of tread remaining.
• Damaged through use of any tube or flap other than a Sumitomo tube or
flap.
LIMITATIONS
A cash refund will not be given in lieu of the credits provided for unless
Sumitomo Tire in its sole discretion so elects. No Sumitomo distributor or
representative has the authority to make any commitment, promise, addition
or modification to the terms of this express warranty.
All implied warranties, with respect to Sumitomo Tire, either of merchantability
or otherwise, are to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law,
disclaimed entirely or, if not so disclaimable, limited in duration to the period
of this express limited warranty.

CLAIM PROCEDURE
Each of the following procedures must be complied with in order to qualify for any
credit provided by this warranty:
1. Present the unserviceable tire, together with any tube and flap used with that
tire, to an authorized Sumitomo distributor.
2. Complete and sign a Sumitomo Tire Claim Form to be provided by that
distributor.
3. Present to that distributor any evidence that may be necessary to establish
entitlement to the warranty (e.g., proof that claimant was the first purchaser for use
of the tire).
4. Pay the price of the new tire, including any federal and local taxes and any
distributor mounting, balancing or other charges, less Sumitomo Tire’s credit.
Sumitomo shall not be responsible for (1) any commercial loss, (2) any
damage to, or loss of property other than the tire itself, or (3) any other
incidental damages permitted by law, arising from any defect in any
Sumitomo Tire.
Some states do not allow limitation on how long an implied warranty lasts, or
the exclusions of incidental damages, so the above limitations may not apply
to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights and you may also have
other right which vary from state to state. If it should be determined that the
remedies set forth in this limited warranty fail of their essential purpose, the
buyer’s remedies against Sumitomo for any breach or warranty shall be
limited to a return of the unserviceable tire to Sumitomo, reduced by the
depreciation of such tire.
