The Louisiana Purchase
READ the text (pp. 295-301) or virtual text (p. 103) and answer the following questions
with TWO OR MORE complete sentences.

1. The text states: “For the western farmers, this agreement was vital to their economic
survival.” Use details from the text to describe what “the agreement” was and why it was
so important.
Farmers needed access to the Mississippi to transport their crops to market. The
Spanish controlled the region, but they allowed the Americans to sail on the lower
Mississippi and trade in New Orleans.
2. Why did the idea of the French having control of the Louisiana Territory worry
Jefferson?
France’s leader, Napoleon Bonaparte, had plans to create empires in Europe and
the Americas. French control would put American trade along the Mississippi River
at risk.

3. How did Toussaint L’Ouverture affect the history of the United States?
Slaves rebelled and took control of Saint-Dominque(Haiti). Without Saint-
Dominque, Napoleon had little use for Louisiana. In order to solve his money
problems, he decided to sell the Louisiana territory.

Document finding about the territory’s people, plants, and animals, and
recommended sites for future forests. Finding and mapping the Northwest passage.
6. Describe the qualifications of the men chosen to lead the expedition.
Lewis and Clark were well-informed amateur scientists who also had experiences
with Native Americans. They assembled a crew of expert sailors, gunsmiths,
carpenters, scouts, and a cook. Two men of mixed Native American and French
Heritage served as interpreters
7. Briefly describe the journey of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
The Corps of Discovery left St.Luis in the spring of 1804 and traveled up the
Missouri River. They encountered many Native American groups on the Journey.
After 18 months and nearly 4000 miles they reached the Pacific Ocean. They
returned to St.Luis in September of 1806.
8. Why would Federalists want to secede?
A group of federalists in Massachusetts plotted to secede or withdraw from the
Union. New England would become the “Northern Confederacy”. The plotters
realized that if the confederacy were to last, it had to include New York as well as
New England. The Massachusetts Federalists needed a powerful friend in New York
who would support their plan.
9. What are the reasons behind Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr’s duel?
Alexander Hamilton was concerned about rumors of secessions. He had never
trusted Aaron Burr, and now he heard that Burr had secretly agreed to lead New
York out of Union. Hamilton accused Burr of plotting treason.
