Course Description
The course reviews topics such as conceptual data modelling, relational data model, relational
query languages, relational database design and transaction processing and current technologies
such as semantic web, parallel and NoSQL databases. It exposes the student to the concepts and
techniques in database use and development as well provides a foundation for research in
databases.

Course Objectives
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
1. Understand the principles underlying database systems and the kinds of purposes for
which they are used.
2. Understand the relational model and be able to model data as relations.
3. Review relational data model, relational query languages, relational database design and
conceptual data modeling.

 Students should be well dressed and cell phones should not be used during
lectures.
 All assignments must be taken serious since they form part of the assessment.
