Ali al-Huthaifi 9-1-1439 (29-9-2017G)

A Warning against Trials and a Call for Leading an Ascetic Life

His Eminence Sheikh Ali ibn Abdur-Rahman al-Huthaifi, may Allah preserve him,
delivered the Friday khutbah entitled, “A Warning against Trials and a Call for Leading
an Ascetic Life,” in which he talked about the divine command to maintain unity and
agreement and abandon discord and disputes among Muslims, warning against trials and
dissensions in general. He also showed the virtue and importance of leading an ascetic
life, citing textual evidence for all that from the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

Part One
Praise be to Allah, the Most Great, the Most High, and the Owner of Greatness,
Grandeur, and Majesty. I praise my Lord and thank Him for His favours, which none can
count but Him. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, Who has no partners,
the Owner of Grace and Favours. I also bear witness that our Prophet and Master,
Muhammad, is His servant and messenger, whom Allah favoured with the best traits and
qualities. O Allah! Bestow Your peace and blessings upon Your servant and messenger
Muhammad and upon his family and Companions, who always hastened to do righteous
deeds.
Now then,
Fear Allah, Exalted be He, by drawing closer to Him with deeds that He loves and
accepts and by avoiding all that he dislikes and forbids. It is the fear of Allah that sets
right everything in this life and helps people attain the highest positions in the life to
come. Allah, Exalted be He, says:

... and whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him,
He will make his matter easy for him. (At-Talaq: 4)
Allah, Glorified be He, also says,

Such is the Paradise which We shall give as an inheritance

to those of Our slaves who have been Al-Muttaqun (the
pious). (Maryam: 63)
O Muslims!
Islam enjoins us to preserve unity and agreement and forbids us to sow discord
and division. This aims to preserve the Islamic religion, without which life cannot truly

1
Sheikh Dr. Ali al-Huthaifi 9-1-1439 (29-9-2017G)

be established and Paradise cannot be attained. This also aims to protect society from
disintegration, disturbance, and chaos and keep it away from disputes, transgression, and
corruption; to safeguard Muslims against clashes, hatred, conflicts, and the exchange of
insults; to protect interests, benefits, and rights, both public and private; and to establish
security, justice, and stability. It is because of all this that Allah, Glorified be He, has
commanded Muslims to preserve agreement and has forbidden discord. Allah, Exalted be
He, says:

And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah

(i.e. this Qur’an), and be not divided among yourselves,
and remember Allah’s Favour on you, for you were
enemies one to another but He joined your hearts
together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in
Islamic Faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire,
and He saved you from it. Thus Allah makes His verses
clear to you, that you may be guided. (Al ‘Imran: 103)
Allah, Glorified be He, also says,

... Help one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue,

righteousness and piety), but do not help one another in
sin and transgression ... (Al-Ma’idah :2)
Allah, Might and Majesty be to Him, also says:

The believers, men and women, are Auliya’ (helpers,

supporters, friends, protectors) of one another... (At-
Taubah: 71)
Allah, Exalted be He, also says:

The believers are nothing else than brothers (in Islamic

religion) ... (Al-Hujurat: 10)
Allah, Might and Majesty be to Him, also says:

... So perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), give Zakat and

hold fast to Allah [i.e. have confidence in Allah, and
depend upon Him in all your affairs]. He is your Maula
(Patron, Lord), what an Excellent Maula (Patron, Lord) and
what an Excellent Helper! (Al-Hajj: 78)

2
Sheikh Dr. Ali al-Huthaifi 9-1-1439 (29-9-2017G)

Allah, Exalted be He, also says:

… And whoever holds firmly to Allah, (i.e. follows Islam-

Allah's religion, and practically obeys all that Allah has
ordered), then he is indeed guided to a Right Path. (Al
‘Imran: 101)
Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet,
peace and blessings be upon him, said, “A believer to a believer is like the bricks of a
building which support each other,” and he interlaced his fingers (Reported by al-
Bukhari and Muslim). An-Nu‘man ibn Bashir, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated
that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “In their mutual kindness,
compassion, and sympathy, the believers are like one body. When one of its
limbs aches, the whole body responds to it with sleeplessness and fever”
(Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim). Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him,
narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Be
servants of Allah and brothers” (Reported by Muslim).
Unity and agreement, concord and harmony, solidarity and compassion, support
of truth, and rejection of discord and division, all constitute a fortress to which society
resorts, a sanctuary in which people take refuge, and a safe haven for everyone. They are
a source of power for religion, a means to preserve the benefits of this worldly life, a
shield against deluding trials, and a source of protection against the enemies’ harm and
evil plotting. Just as Allah, Exalted be He, has commanded us to protect the unity and
strength of society and to preserve compassion among its members, He has also
prohibited disagreement, hostility, dissension, discord, disorder, and all that leads to evil.
Allah, Exalted be He, says:

And be not as those who divided and differed among

themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. It is
they for whom there is an awful torment. (Al ‘Imran: 105)
Allah, Exalted be He, also says:

... and do not dispute (with one another) lest you lose
courage and your strength departs, and be patient. ... (Al-
Anfal: 46)
Allah, Glorified be He, also says,

3
Sheikh Dr. Ali al-Huthaifi 9-1-1439 (29-9-2017G)

... and be not of Al-Mushrikun (the polytheists, idolaters,

disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah). Of those who split up
their religion (i.e. who left the true Islamic Monotheism),
and became sects, [i.e. they invented new things in the
religion (Bid‘ah), and followed their vain desires], each
sect rejoicing in that which is with it. (Ar-Rum: 31-32)
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “A Muslim is the brother of
his fellow Muslim. He should not oppress him, fail him, lie to him, or look down on
him. The whole of a Muslim is inviolable for another Muslim: his blood, his
property, and his honour” (Reported by Muslim on the authority of Abu Hurairah, may
Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also said, “A
Muslim is the brother of his fellow Muslim. He should not wrong him or hand him
over to enemies” (Reported by Al-Bukhari, on the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar, may
Allah be pleased with him and his father). The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him,
also said, “A Muslim is the brother of his fellow Muslim. He should not betray him,
lie to him, or fail him” (Reported by at-Tirmidhi on the authority of Abu Hurairah, may
Allah be pleased with him). These are prohibitions and warnings against neglecting other
Muslims’ rights, as doing so is bound to cause division among Muslims.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gave the Companions some
beneficial words of advice, commanding consolidation, integration, and agreement and
prohibiting division, discord, and innovation in religion, thus combining both worldly and
religious benefits. He said to his Companions, “I advise you to fear Allah and to listen
and obey, even if your leader was a slave. Whoever among you lives after I am
gone will see much discord. I urge you to adhere to my Sunnah and the way of
the Rightly-Guided Caliphs; cling tightly to it. Beware of newly-invented matters
[in religion], for every innovation [in religion] is misguidance” (Reported by Abu
Dawud and at-Tirmidhi, who said it has a good, authenticated chain of transmission, on
the authority of al-‘Irbad ibn Sariyah, may Allah be pleased with him).
One sign of Allah’s mercy to Muslims is that He has warned them against trials in
general. Allah, Might and Majesty be to Him, says:

And fear the Fitnah (affliction and trial) which affects not
in particular (only) those of you who do wrong (but it may
afflict all the good and the bad people), and know that
Allah is Severe in punishment. (Al-Anfal: 25)

4
Sheikh Dr. Ali al-Huthaifi 9-1-1439 (29-9-2017G)

Commentators on the Qur’an said, “This means, ‘Avoid the causes of any harmful
affliction or trial which exposes you to the punishment of Allah, Exalted be He.’”
Just as Islam has forbidden all that leads to dissension and trials in general and
cautioned against them because of the harm they cause, it has also warned against
specific types of dissension and sedition which harm both those who initiate them and
others. Islam has warned against withdrawal from the main body of Muslims (al-
jama‘ah). Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, peace
and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever departs the main body of Muslims (al-
jama‘ah) even by as much distance as a hand span has thrown the yoke of Islam
from his neck” (Reported by Abu Dawud). It was narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar, may
Allah be pleased with him and his father, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon
him, said, “My Ummah will not agree on misguidance; therefore, adhere to the
main body of Muslims (al-jama‘ah), for the Hand of Allah is with the main body of
Muslims” (Reported by at-Tabarani). Mu‘awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, may Allah be pleased
with him, narrated that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever
dies without having given a bai‘ah (pledge of allegiance to a Muslim ruler) has
died the death of one belonging to al-Jahiliyyah (Days of Ignorance before
Islam)” (Reported by at-Tabarani in al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir).
Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that he
disapproved of Uthman ibn Affan, may Allah be pleased with him, performing four
rak‘ahs in Mina (instead of observing the prayer of a traveller, i.e. two rak‘ahs during
Hajj), but then he himself stood and prayed four rak‘ahs. He was asked, “You
disapproved of the Leader of Believers doing something. Why did you do it yourself,
then?” He said, “Because division is evil” (Reported by Ahmad).
Islam has also warned against infatuation with this worldly life to the extent of
neglecting and forgetting about doing good deeds for the afterlife. Indeed, real success
lies in doing good deeds for the hereafter because it is the everlasting abode, while
striving to improve one’s worldly life with all that is beneficial and useful strengthens
Islam, fulfils the needs of Muslims, saves them from the humiliation of begging others,
and helps them spend on the various good causes. Allah, Exalted be He, says:

O mankind! Be afraid of your Lord (by keeping your duty

to Him and avoiding all evil), and fear a Day when no
father can avail aught for his son, nor a son avail aught for
his father. Verily, the Promise of Allah is true: let not then
this (worldly) present life deceive you, nor let the chief
deceiver (Satan) deceive you about Allah. (Luqman: 33)

5
Sheikh Dr. Ali al-Huthaifi 9-1-1439 (29-9-2017G)

Allah, Exalted be He, also says:

And this life of the world is only amusement and play!

Verily, the home of the Hereafter – that is the life indeed
(i.e. the eternal life that will never end), if they but knew.
(Al-‘Ankabut: 64)
Allah, Exalted be He, also says:

Everyone shall taste death. And only on the Day of

Resurrection shall you be paid your wages in full. And
whoever is removed away from the Fire and admitted to
Paradise, he indeed is successful. The life of this world is
only enjoyment of deception (a deceiving thing). (Al ‘Imran:
185)
On the other hand, occupying oneself with this life by amassing its transient
worldly possessions by both lawful and unlawful means will only plague those who do so
with dreadful consequences and do harm and evil to society. Accumulating such
possessions by infringing on the rights of others and transgressing against their property
causes division in society and weakens the bonds and ties that keep Muslims together.
Competing with one another for this worldly life with eagerness, covetousness, and
animosity incites hatred in people’s hearts and leads to differences and discord. ‘Uqbah
ibn ‘Amir, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed the
funeral prayer over the martyrs of the Battle of Uhud. Then he ascended
the pulpit as if bedding farewell to both the living and the dead and said, “I
shall precede you to the Cistern (on the Day of Judgement), and it
is as wide as the distance between Aila [at the top of al-‘Aqabah Gulf]
and Juhfa [to the north-west of Makkah]. I do not fear for you that you
associate others with Allah after I am gone; what I fear for you is
this worldly life -- I fear that you compete with one another and fight
against one another for its sake, such that it will destroy you as it
destroyed those before you.” That was the last time I saw the
Messenger of Allah. (Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim, and the
wording is that of the latter)
Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger
of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The life of the world is sweet and

6
Sheikh Dr. Ali al-Huthaifi 9-1-1439 (29-9-2017G)

alluring, and Allah has made you generations succeeding one another in order to
see how you act in it. So beware of the temptations of this world and the
temptations of women” (Reported by Muslim). This worldly life has hindered most
people from the religion of Allah, Exalted be He, with its ornament, pleasures, lustful
desires, and enjoyments. Allah, Might and Majesty be to Him, says:

... And woe unto the disbelievers from a severe torment.

Those who prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter,
and hinder (men) from the Path of Allah (i.e. Islam) and
seek crookedness therein – they are far astray. (Ibrahim: 2-
3)
The first case of division in the history of the Ummah occurred when a group of
hypocrites rebelled against the Rightly-Guided Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, may Allah be
pleased with him. That dissension was motivated by sheer love for the worldly life, as
established and recorded in history, and those who initiated it sought only worldly
positions. However, they attained nothing but grief, humiliation, deprivation, and hatred,
and they perished one after another in a pitiful state. We seek refuge in Allah from such a
disgraceful end! Allah, Exalted be He, says:

And a barrier will be set between them and that which

they desire [i.e. At-Taubah (turning to Allah in repentance)
and the accepting of Faith], as was done in the past with
the people of their kind. ... (Saba’: 54)
In this time of ours, which is very distant from the era of the Prophet, peace and
blessings be upon him, the worldly life has become a trial for most people. Disputes arise
for its sake; communication and ties of brotherhood are established to attain its benefits;
harmony exists to achieve its interests; hatred, separation, and severance of ties take place
only over worldly matters; and people are judged by its standards. Thus, it has become a
main cause of different desires, and love for the sake of Allah, Exalted be He, has
regrettably diminished. Abdullah ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him and his
father, said, “Nowadays, most fraternity relationships between people are based
on worldly matters, which will not be of any benefit for them” (Reported by Ibn
Jarir).
Avoiding the evil of worldly trials lies in realising the true worth of the present
life in the sight of the Lord, Majesty and Glory be to Him, for He is the Best to know
about it, and in the sight of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.
Sahl ibn Sa‘d, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, peace and

7
Sheikh Dr. Ali al-Huthaifi 9-1-1439 (29-9-2017G)

blessings be upon him, said, “Were this world worth a mosquito wing in the sight of
Allah, He would not let a disbeliever have a sip of water in it” (Reported by at-
Tirmidhi, who classified it as authenticated (sahih)).
Remember the condition of ahl as-suffah, those poor Muslim emigrants who lived
in the shelter of the back of the Prophet’s Mosque, and think of the ascetic life they led.
Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “I saw seventy people from among
ahl as-suffah, and none of them had an upper garment. They had either a lower garment
or woollen cloth tied to their necks. Some reached half way down to the legs and some to
the heels. Some of them would hold their garments together with their hands lest their
private parts might be exposed” (Reported by al-Bukhari). Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, may
Allah be pleased with him, said:
I was sitting in the company of the some poor members of al-Muhajirun
(the Muslim emigrants from Makkah to al-Madinah). Some of them were
huddled together lest their nakedness should be seen. Then the Prophet,
peace and blessings be upon him, came along, stood beside us, and said,
“Rejoice, O poor group of the emigrants, in the good news that you
will have perfect light on the Day of Judgement. You will enter
Paradise half a day before the rich, and that is five hundred years
long.” (Reported by at-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud, and the wording is that
of the latter)
As for you, fellow Muslims, you have been given worldly wealth in abundance by
virtue of those emigrants who strove hard in the cause of Allah. Therefore, thank Allah
for that, worship Him, and do not disobey Him. Leading an ascetic life is one means of
avoiding quarrels and disputes. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said,
“Live an ascetic life in this world, and Allah will love you. Show no interest in what
people possess, and people will love you” (Reported by Ibn Majah on the authority
of Sahl ibn Sa‘d as-Sa‘idi, may Allah be pleased with him. An-Nawawi, may Allah have
mercy on his soul, classified it as hasan (good)).
Thus, leading an ascetic life essentially means renouncing and having no desire in
all that is unlawful, being content with what Allah has granted you, desiring and working
for the afterlife, avoiding being inclined to the worldly life or being contented with it,
refraining from seeking what other people possess, and abstaining from envying anyone
for what Allah has granted him.
O Muslims!

8
Sheikh Dr. Ali al-Huthaifi 9-1-1439 (29-9-2017G)

Another means of protecting and preserving society, keeping it united, strong, and
steadfast in the face of the hurricanes of trials, and enabling it to defeat its enemies and
ward off the harm of every evil-doer is to constantly and sincerely counsel the rulers in
accordance with the way adopted by the righteous predecessors in this respect. This will
always put into practice the meaning of the verse in which Allah, Exalted be He, says:

... Help one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue,

righteousness and piety) ... (Al-Ma’idah: 2)
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “There are three things
that Allah likes for you: that you should worship Him alone, without associating
anything with Him, that you hold fast to the Rope of Allah and not be divided
among yourselves, and that you offer advice to your rulers” (Reported by Muslim
on the authority of Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him). Allah, Exalted be He,
says:

O you who believe! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger

(Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him), and those
of you (Muslims) who are in authority. And if you differ in
anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allah and His
Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) if you
believe in Allah and in the Last Day. That is better and
more suitable for final determination. (An-Nisa’: 59)
May Allah bless you and me with the Great Qur’an and make us benefit from its
verses and wise words and benefit from the guidance and right sayings of the Imam of all
Messengers. I have said what you have heard and I ask forgiveness of Allah for myself,
for you, and for all Muslims. Ask Allah for forgiveness.

Part Two

9
Sheikh Dr. Ali al-Huthaifi 9-1-1439 (29-9-2017G)

Praise be to Allah. Praise be to Allah, the All-Mighty, the All-Wise, the Most
Forbearing, and the Most Merciful. I praise my Lord and thank Him for His favours,
which none can count but Him. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, Who
has no partners, the Most High, the Most Great. I also bear witness that our Prophet and
Master, Muhammad, is His servant and messenger, through whom Allah guided people to
the straight path. O Allah! Bestow Your peace and blessings upon Your servant and
messenger Muhammad and upon his family and Companions, who adhered to his right
way.
Now then,
Fear Allah in secret and in public, for fear of Allah preserves the existing favours
and secures those that are yet to come. Allah, Exalted be He, says:

O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allah and fear Him,
and speak (always) the truth. He will direct you to do
righteous good deeds and will forgive you your sins. And
whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger (peace and
blessings be upon him), he has indeed achieved a great
achievement (i.e. he will be saved from the Hell-fire and
will be admitted to Paradise). (Al-Ahzab: 70-71)
O Muslims!
Islam has warned against words that lead to destruction. Indeed, false statements
and writings wreck solidarity among people, shatter their unity, lead to disagreement,
give rise to numerous personal desires, lead people astray, and widen division amongst
them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Let him who believes in
Allah and the Last Day speak good or remain silent” (Reported by al-Bukhari and
Muslim on the authority of Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him).
When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, warned against trials and
dissensions, he repeatedly made it clear that false speech in times of trials and dissensions
leads to destruction. He said, “The tongue during them will be severer than the blow
of a sword” (Reported by at-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud on the authority of Abdullah ibn
Amr, may Allah be pleased with him). He also said, “Giving free rein to the tongue
during them will be like the blow of a sword” (Reported by Abu Dawud on the
authority of Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him). He said that out of
compassion for the Muslim Ummah, to preserve the Islamic religion, and to suppress
trials and dissensions and their causes.

10
Sheikh Dr. Ali al-Huthaifi 9-1-1439 (29-9-2017G)

Servants of Allah!
Maintain the blessings of security, stability, and prosperity by doing acts of
worship that draw you nearer to your Lord and by refraining from committing prohibited
deeds. Allah, Exalted be He, says:

So let them worship (Allah) the Lord of this House (the
Ka‘bah in Makkah), (He) Who has fed them against
hunger, and has made them safe from fear. (Quraish: 3-4)
O Muslims!

Allah sends His Salat (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy)

on the Prophet (Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon
him)) and also His angels (ask Allah to bless and forgive
him). O you who believe! Send your Salat on (ask Allah to
bless) him (Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon
him)), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islamic
way of greeting (salutation, i.e. AsSalamu ‘Alaikum). (Al-
Ahzab: 56)
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “If a person asks Allah to send
blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him ten times over.”
Therefore, ask Allah to bestow His peace and blessings on the master of those who
preceded us and those who are yet to come, and the Imam of Messengers.
O Allah! Bestow Your peace upon Muhammad and his family, as You bestowed
Your peace upon Ibrahim and his family; You are All-Praiseworthy, All-Glorious. O
Allah! Bestow Your blessings upon Muhammad and his family, as You bestowed Your
blessings upon Ibrahim and his family; You are All-Praiseworthy, All-Glorious. O Allah!
Bestow Your bountiful peace and blessings upon Muhammad and his family.
O Allah! Be pleased with the Rightly-Guided Caliphs and Imams, Abu Bakr,
Umar, Uthman, and Ali, along with all Your Prophet’s Companions, and with those who
follow them in righteousness until the Day of Judgement. O Allah! Be pleased with us
together with them, by Your grace, munificence, and mercy, O Most Merciful of all the
merciful!
O Allah! Grant power and glory to Islam and Muslims. O Allah! Grant power and
glory to Islam and Muslims and humiliate disbelief and the disbelievers. O Allah! Grant
power and glory to Islam and Muslims.

O Lord of the Worlds! O Allah! Show mercy to the Ummah of Prophet Muhammad,
peace and blessings be upon him.

Owner of Majesty and Honour!
O Allah! We seek refuge in You from all evil, in this world and in the hereafter.

... Our Lord! Give us that which is good in this world and
that which is good in the Hereafter, and save us from the
torment of Hellfire! (Al-Baqarah: 201)
Servants of Allah!

Verily, Allah enjoins Al-‘Adl (i.e. justice and worshipping

none but Allah Alone - Islamic Monotheism) and Al-Ihsan
