BASIC COMPETENCIES

Skip count by twos, fives and tens starting from zero

In the previous grade, we have learn about numbers from 1 to 10. All of you must be curious about the
next order of numbers. It’s okay since today we will learn about numbers, from 1 to 100. Check this out!

I’m sure you could read the first row of the table above easily. But how about the second row? Please
read loudly and memorize the spelling of the numbers below :

Do you see the word I bold above? This is the spelling key of the other numbers in second row. But, to
make it more fun, I want you to write the spelling of units position of each numbers below

Now, we will learn about the last column in the table of 1 to 100. Remember that 100 is read ‘one

Next, we will learn the remaining cells. It’s simple, just read the tens part and continued by the units part.

Basic operation in math are addition and subtraction. They are useful in theoretical math and practical
math. It’s fun to learn about them. Let’s do it!

Learn the story below!

Ami’s parents give Ami 5 coins everyday for daily snacks. Today, her grandparents visit her house. Before
she go to school, Grandmother gives her 3 coins. How many coins she have today?

The story above uses concept of Addition when Ami got coins from her grandma, and Subtraction when
Ami bought an ice cream by some of her coins. Now, do you get the concept of addition and
subtraction?

To make it clearer, read the mathematical notation of Ami’s story :

Do you ever share a biscuit with your brother or sister? How do you spare the biscuit? I bet you will share
the biscuits in two equal parts. It’s good idea.

In mathematics, each part of your biscuit called one half of biscuit. See the illustration below :

You have learned about numbers in the last grade. Do you remember it?

Yes. Numbers, have it own order so we can easily remember it. But, now we will discuss abot number
sequence. Learn the illustration below :

Mother asks Anita to organize the dining table for the birthday event. Mother have arrange 12 placemat
on the table so Anita can put 6 tissue box on them. How would Anita arrange their positions so they’re
arranged neatly?

Let’s help Anita. We know that if we want to arrange them neatly, we have to arrange them by order. But
how?

First, let’s imagine the placemats are the numbers

Now, see that Anita will have two choices to arrange the tissue boxes neatly. They are :

So, the neat arranging are :

In mathematics, both of the numbers arranging is called Sequence.

Are you now have the concept of sequence in your mind? I think you do. But, let’s make it more clear by
reading the definition of sequence below :

In mathematics, sequence is an enumerated collection of objects in which repetitions are allowed


and order does matter

CHAPTER 5 : USING UNITS OF MEASUREMENT
BASIC COMPETENCIES

1. Measure and compare the lengths and capacities of pairs of objects using uniform informal
units
2. Tell time to the half-hour
3. Describe duration using months, weeks, days and hours

Informal Units
Do you ever know ruler? What is it for? In your opinion, how can people measure something without ruler?
It’s not impossible. Especially for measurements in home area, your mother must ever use her hand to
easure something. It’s okay, as long as the precise length are not really needed. Learn the story below
and then fix the problem!

Mommy want to buy a pair of shoes for me. But unfortunately, today I can’t join my mommy to buy the
shoes because I have to finish my school task. Since I really need it tomorrow, my mommy choose to go
by herself. Before she go out, she measure my foot by her hand. Please give me a reasonable reasons
that make me sure that my mommy will bought me shoes with right size.

Now, we realize that her mommy using informal units of measurements since mommy’s hand is not
formal units of measurements.

Time
Do you ever asked by your mother about the time? How do you read the clock to show the time? Some of
us must have no idea about it. It’s okay since today we will discuss about it.

In digital clock, you can easily read the numbers on it to show the time. But in casual clock, you should
think some important thing. Look over the clocks below and see comparison among them!

If you find that the long needle are point at 12, it’s true. But we could see that the short needle point to
many number. How to read them?

The answer is, as long as the long needle point at 12, you can show time by read the number that short
needle point at it. See the example :

Now, do you ever heard someone say “half pass two” or “half pass …” to show the time? You must be
curious what is ‘half’ means. Now, look over the clocks below and see the comparison!

Yes, the comparison is the long needle point at 6. If you find a clock with this condition and you want to
show the time, you can use “half pass …”
But, how about the number to fill ‘…’? The answer is, choose the smallest near number to the short
needle. Example :

We read it half pass 9

I think all of you have understand about two type showing time. Now, see the exercise to make you fluent.

How Long it Takes?
How long do you spend your time to studying in a day? How long do you spend your time in Bali during
holiday with your family? It must be familiar questions for us. But, do you really understand how to
determine duration? Now, we will discuss about it.

HOURS

An hours, equal with 60 minutes. But easily, an hours is time when long needle go back to its first time
you saw it. Read the story below :

Ahmad start to studying at 7 p.m., because he finally feel tired, he choose to go to sleep. But, as always,
before go to sleep, he has to get wudhu. When he in a way to bathroom, his mother ask him about the
time. He answers “It’s 9 o’clock” Can u determine how long Ahmad studying?

Let’s determine together. Use analog clock to make it easier :

So, Ahmad took 2 hours for learning.

DAYS

A day, equal with 24 hours. If we see in a clock, a day is equal with the time where the short needle rotate
for two times. But, if we see in calendar, a day equal with the time the date change. Read the story below

Romeo and his family will go to the villa next holiday. They choose to go by car at Sunday, 5 April 2020
and will go home at Tuesday, 7 April 2020. How long they stay at the villa?

To make it easier, let’s use a part of calendar below :

WEEKS

A week equal with 7 days. Or, in calendar, a week is equal with time for a day changing til it back to the
same day. Learn the story below :

In Saturday night, Carla preparing agenda for her study for the final exam. She will start tomorrow, and
based on her agenda, she need a week to finish her study. When will she complete her study if she study
every 7 p.m to 9 p.m everyday?

To make it easier, let’s use a part of calendar below :

MONTHS

A month equal with 30 days. But, in practice, there are months in a year that conduct less than or more
than 30 days. For example January has 31 days and february has 28 or 29 days. But, for determining
duration in a month, we use 30 days or simply look over the calendar. Learn the story below :

Rebecca start her Japanese Course at the beginning of January, she have to do it ‘til the end of March.
How long the course take?

So, Rebecca join this course for 3 months.

Now, which duration are you feelin disappointed? If there are some duration that feel so hard for you, you
can ask your mother and father to do exercise below. Hopefully you and your family would like it.

1. Identify outcomes of familiar events involving chance and describe them using everyday
language such as ‘will happen’, ‘won’t happen’ or ‘might happen’

FAITH

Ahmad are clever boy. He wish to join Mathematical Olympiade Team this year. Even if he still in the first
grade, he won’t be unfaithful. He work hard, he believe that miracle might happen in his life. The miracle
seems come closer while Ahmad passes the first test. Someday, his dream to be the youngest
mathematical doctor will happen, he believes. But unfortunately, he lost the second test. Now he know,
that his want won’t happen and maybe never be happen. He lost his faith. But he is so lucky for having a
mom like his Mom. His Mom said “God never denies your wants, he will answers… But in 3 possible way.
First, ‘okay, that’s for you’. Second, ‘Not now, wait for a best time’. Or the last, ‘You deserve for something
better’. Ahmad gets his faith back.

I thought it was touchful story, right? But it’s not our main topics, because now you have to take a look at
the word bolded. Do you ever use this word in daily conversation? Do you know what is the differences
between them? Now, discuss with your teacher and classmates what is the function of each phrase and
write an example :
