Operation

The HPE provides additional point capacity to a P1 FLN network. The HPE responds to requests and
commands from other network controllers, via the network master controller. The Master may communicate
with multiple HPE units for monitoring and issuing point commands. Changes of a point value are requested
from and issued to the HPE points over the network by the Master.

DI and UI points may be used for pulse accumulation, giving a total of 16 pulse accumulation inputs. The
maximum pulse frequency is 10Hz. Pulse accumulators may be reset by command from the Master.

UI points may be configured as passive AI, active AI, DI or pulse accumulation. Passive AI set up selection
reflects Ni1000, PT1000, NTC 10k and NTC 100k sensor elements. The default UI resistor rafts reflect NTC
100k passive, DI and pulse counting applications Other passive sensor elements of 1kΩ and above may be
used by customising the linearization tables and the UI resistor rafts.

DI’s and UI’s may also be configured as toggle inputs whereby on receipt of a pulse the input will latch ON
until a subsequent pulse toggles the input state back to OFF.

All I/O statuses (digital) and values (analogue) may be manually commanded for testing, commissioning and
servicing. Inputs will return to ‘Auto’ after a power reset. Outputs will retain the manual state as a power-up
default if written (W). Written output statuses will become invalid on receipt of a valid command from the
Master.

DO points may be set with minimum ON time and minimum OFF time (10sec default setting for each change
of state) and may also be set to ‘Remember’ the last Master command on a return from power failure. The
Remember function takes priority over the user start up default settings.

Sensor Type Linearisation & Scaling

Using a Row# (1…14)/Column# (2…7) matrix it is possible to customise the sensor
labels (rows 1…3), sensor curves (rows 4…11), intercept (row 12), decimal
placement (row 13) and units multiplier (row 14).

Example: to change Type 2 curve (0-10Vdc) to display label as rH sensor and

include one decimal place…
L14=r
L24=H
L134=-1
The ‘L’ prefix is not required when the Linearisation table is being displayed. The
‘L’ prefix should always be included when entering such commands when other
screens are active or when such commands are downloaded to the controller as a
textfile. Refer the Linearisation section on Pg 15 for further explanation.

See the further description of

SLL’s which follows

HRW Limited HRW Data HPE8884P1 V4 100908.doc Subject to change without notice Page 6/21
Screen Line Logic (SLL)

SLL allows a summary screen line’s information to be hidden until a particular point’s output goes high. For
example:

If Screen Line 24 text is “AHU1 Fan Failure!” and point 8 (DI8) has a thermal trip contact connected (for
instance), then set up as follows:

 SLL24=8
 Enter W (Write) to force reformatting of Screen to take in to account the new SLL settings

Now the text of Screen Line 24 will only appear, at the top of the screen, when point 8 is high (alarm state)

Notes for SLL function:

1) If a Screen Line is text only and is required to display only when the connected SLL point’s state
U U

goes high then the next used Screen Line above it should have no SLL assigned

2) If a Screen Line has an point value display assigned and is assigned an SLL point then it will always
display in it’s normal screen position and will be duplicated at the top of the screen in the event of it’s
U U

SLL point value status going high

3) To enable viewing of the Screen Line numbers, the point numbers of displayed point values and SLL
connections enter SLLD (Screen Line Logic Display). Enter SLLD again to return to normal display

4) SLLD will automatically be disabled after a power reset

Universal Inputs

UI’s feature a resistor raft and linearization tables which allow the user to define a wide range of sensor types
which is particularly useful for retrofit activities where existing sensors may be reused. The table below
outlines the resistive values required in the UI resistance raft for standard input variations and sensor types.

Linearization of standard analogue sensors is made in the device therefore slope values for the Master
controller are standardized accordingly. The linearization tables in the device may be changed and resistance
raft values calculated to suit other sensors as required.

The UI resistance raft is fitted by default with 1. Gain resistor

position 2; configuration as Digital/pulse Input
or 100kΩ -10…90°C NTC thermistor 2. Biasing resistor
temperature sensor.

Actual assignment of the input as DI, pulse 3. Voltage divider

counter or NTC thermistor is made by
selecting the relevant linearization table for
the input. 4. Dropping resistor

Other standard configurations are made

according the table below and by PC
assignment of the predefined standard Resistor tolerance
linearization curve. Default raft UI selection
is shown in bold text. Other selections should be 1% or better
require adaptation of the raft resistance
values as indicated.

Setup:

We strongly recommend you to save the HyperTerminal setup for each baud rate you may wish to use with
an easily recognised configuration name. For example:

 HPECOM 24 (2400)
 HPECOM 48 (4800)
 HPECOM 96 (9600)
 HPECOM 19.2 (19200)
 HPECOM 38.4 (38400)
 HPECOM 57.6 (57600)

Saving one or more of these HyperTerminal configurations enables trouble free communication without
having to repeat the HyperTerminal set up in future.

When using an RS232 to USB converter with the HPECOM cable please ensure the driver supplied with the
converter cable is used. A recommended converter is the U232-P9.

Operational Displays

Below is an illustration of the default summary screen of a new HPE8884. The default screen may be
customised to include free-text descriptions of up to 24 points complete with dynamic display of point values.

To customise the summary screen follow the Display Operation guide at the bottom of page 3 for manual
text/data point entry or send down the configuration textfile created using the FuncProg tool;

Enter DE (Download Eprom) and you will see ‘Ready’ bottom-left of the screen. Now go to the Transfer menu
item in HyperTerminal, select Send Text File, then open the path to the file you want to download…

HRW Limited HRW Data HPE8884P1 V4 100908.doc Subject to change without notice Page 12/21
Operational Displays (cont…)

After the text file has downloaded you will see immediately after download a check of number of lines
expected and number of lines received. If the two values are equal then you will see ‘Restarting…’ at which
point the new configuration is written to non-volatile memory automatically.

If the text file location on your PC has a long path to track then during the time of locating the text file
HyperTerminal may send some empty lines automatically in the background. In this case the ‘lines expected’
and ‘lines received’ values will not match.

After a non match there will be a timeout before the device goes back to normal operation and the new
configuration is not automatically saved, therefore, manually Write (W) to save the new configuration.

We recommend that you save the textfiles in a folder on your PC Desktop to locate them in a time efficient
manner.

Below is an example showing an HPE8884 with a selection of utilised points included in the summary screen

Linearisation Table Sensor Intercept – Row 12

Row 12 enables setting of the range starting point of a sensor type. You may set your own intercepts for a
specific sensor type.

Example:
0-10Vdc sensor with measuring range -30…70°C: Row 12 (Intercept row), column 4 (default Vdc column) = -
30; therefore enter 124=-300 (we must assume a decimal place for the intercept setting)

Result:
The 0…1000 unit raw count range related to a signal input of 0-10Vdc is now set to display in the range
-30…70. You would also want to change the tag to C instead of %; enter 14=C

Note:
If the active sensor’s range maximum value is divisible by 10, 100 or 1000 in to a single digit (1…9) and the
sensor’s full range spans 10’s, 100’s or 1000’s of units then these can all be displayed in true form using the
instructions for setting Decimals and Multipliers which follow.

For other customisations please contact us for linearization assistance.

HRW Limited HRW Data HPE8884P1 V4 100908.doc Subject to change without notice Page 16/21
Linearisation Table Decimal Setting – Row 13

Row 13 allows shifting of the decimal place

13x=0 (no shift) 13x=1 (shift right one place) 13x=-1 (shift left one place)
13x=2 (shift right two places) 13x=-2 (shift left two places)

Linearisation Table Multiplier – Row 14

Row 14 allows the displayed value to be multiplied in the range 1…9. This is useful for any sensors that may
not be in the default ranges of 0-10Vdc / 0…20mA (or 2-10 / 4…20) but relate to those ranges in a factor of
1…9. Or, when used in combination with the decimal placement, in a factor of 0.01…900.

Example:
0-10Vdc sensor with measuring range 0…50°C requires that default raw display of 0-1000 indicates 0-50:

Step 1 – By shifting the decimal place to the left two places, reduce the full-range raw count of 1000 to a
value that is less than the full-range sensor value (50)

 Row 13 (decimal row), column 4 (default Vdc column) = -2; therefore enter 134=-2

The raw count value of 1000 at 10Vdc is now displayed as 10.00

Step 2 – Multiply the displayed value to bring it up to a display of 50 units

 Row 14 (multiplier row), column 4 (default Vdc column) = 5; therefore enter 144=5

Result:
The 0…1000 raw count range related to a signal input of 0-10Vdc is now set to display in the range
0…50

Note:
 Active sensors having a 2…10Vdc range should use the raw values as used in the default mA
(4…20) column 5
 Active sensors having a 0-20mA range should use the raw values as used in the default Vdc (0…10)
column 4

Factory Reset

If using a device that has previously been programmed it is recommended to reset the device to Factory
Default before reprogramming to ensure any settings that are unwanted in the new program have no impact.

To perform a Factory Default reset enter FD=1 (a device set at Factory Default settings will have ‘FD’
displayed in the top line of the Main physical point summary screen [M]).

Note: If using devices with firmware less than version 4.00 then you must download the Factory Default text file to reset
the device to Factory Default.

Installation & Commissioning

 This is an RS485 network device designed for mounting in an electrical panel. Ideally it should be
mounted to the panel backplane in a horizontal position (inputs on the lower side and outputs on the
upper side)

 Each 24Vac power supply transformer should have the neutral (24Vac N) connection earthed at the
electrical panel earth stud to ensure the device grounding is at the same potential as the Master’s
grounding

 Where more than one device is connected to a common transformer ensure that the 24Vac phasing is
the same to each device (‘A’ connects to ‘A’, ‘N’ connects to ‘N’ in all cases)

 If the red comms light (adjacent to the RS485 terminals) emits an obvious flash every time 24Vac
power is applied to the device then the micro-processor is faulty. The micro processor should be
replaced

 Twisted pair shielded cable must be used for the sensors and transmitters connected to the universal
inputs (UI’s). The sensor cable shield must be grounded

 RS485 multi-drop cable should be used. Belden 9841 or equivalent is recommended. The
recommended cable is a low capacitance twisted pair with braid and foil screen

 The RS485 cables should be terminated directly at each device in a daisy-chain configuration,
avoiding ‘laterals’ or ‘spurs’

 The RS485 screen should be connected at the Master’s ground terminal. The incoming and outgoing
screen at each device should be continuously connected via the S terminal of the device (note that
the device’s S terminal has no electrical connection to the circuitry; it merely acts as a junction
terminal for the purpose of screen continuity)

 The RS485 cable should avoid cable routes that run with power cables. Where the RS485 cable must
cross power cables then they should cross at 90° avoiding parallel runs beside power cables

 Prior to connection of the slave devices to the RS485 network check that no AC voltage is present.
Double check the network for short circuits between the twisted pair cores and between the cores and
the screen. Ensure continuity of the twisted pair cores and the screen

 Check the Master controller +/- terminals for correct voltages to ground (approx. 2.5Vdc) and connect
the RS485 network cable to the Master’s RS485 port

 Starting at the first network device, assign an individual address and the baud rate specific to the
network. Define input-specific set up and output default settings. Write the changes, eXit the terminal
application and remove the HPECOM cable

 Verify network voltage at the RS485 connector (between +/- and ground) then connect to the device.
If the device’s address is already configured at the Master, communication can be verified by flashing
of the red comms LED (adjacent the 3 terminal RS485 connector). After initial communication,
subsequent scans of the device can be identified by a periodic flash of the comms LED. Double check
the RS485 voltages to ground and move on to the next device

Installation & Commissioning (cont…)

 Under normal circumstances communication will be trouble free. If any network is subject to unusual
interference causing comms interruption, it may be necessary to include line terminating resistors on
the RS485 network. In this case, connect one 120Ω resistor across the +/- terminals of the Master’s
RS485 port connection and one 120Ω resistor across the +/- terminals of the last device on the
network. The resistor values stated are directly related to the recommended cable type

 Where an network runs between buildings and zero earth potential difference between individual
panel 24Vac power supplies cannot be guaranteed, we recommend that a repeater be used to
provide isolation of the sections of the network having differing earth potential
