TRICKY FREELANCE CLIENTS

THE “HARD TO GET” TECHNIQUE

BY SPENCER FORMAN

COURSE NOTES + ACTION STEPS

THE "HARD TO GET" TECHNIQUE

In this handbook you will learn how to demonstrate to

clients that you are in-control and in-demand.

One of our 1WD.tv students shared her problem with us.

Spence demonstrates how the “Hard To Get” technique could
solve her problem.

THE PROBLEM

Our Student Asks:

I’ve now been asked for a note of my hours by the company I’

ve done the work for, asking me to take into consideration the
learning curve on this project. There does seem to be the
possibility of further work with this particular client, so I want to
keep on good terms.

So, question is… how much, if any, should I shave off the time
I bill for? I was thinking about 5 or so hours at most.

Which is more important – the money or the relationship? Or

both equally?

I asked the budget question again of this potential client, and

was told they want to have a working relationship that’s less
formal, as their network is moving very fast and they want just
quick & dirty enhancements.

Is it time to walk away from this project?

EVIL GENIUS TIP
FROM SPENCE

1WD.tv | Freelance Web Designer

Training
Well, call me “snarky” but I would not give any discount at
all.
This particular client sounds indecisive. This means trouble
for you down the road.

1WD.tv | Freelance Web Designer

Training
Instead of going “discount” I would instead go the other way
where you demonstrate for the client that you are in demand
and therefore feel that your best “value” for them is by being
“accessible” because they are willing to pay your going rate
for you to give them priority.

Training
Any time you give a discount it will be a slippery slope.
Reserve the use of discounts for those cases where the
client has been a proven “quick” payer, and otherwise loyal
relationship.

If you have a client that is indecisive, even about basic
questions like their own budget, then you’re asking for trouble if
you give even an inch!

Hope you take a (zero risk) shot at joining our community and
learning more about these techniques, and how they've worked
for so many folks already!
