ASSIGNMENT

Analyze the issue and use primary sources to support your arguments.

1.) Which of the two sides of mutiny (Spanish version or Filipino version) is more
legitimate?
 The Filipino was more legitimate, although the interpretation of the Spanish Version
also stated facts that also supported the Filipino Version, and vice versa. Spanish
colonization, where oppressors’ dominance through out the country that is subject to
possible unjustified suspicion in any movement against the Spanish government can
easily conclude that the mutiny is a movement of the oppressed filipino workers in
Cavite in order to abolish the oppressive government. This is supported by Trinidad
Pardo de Travera’s account in accordance to the said mutiny.
 Also on Travera’s account, it is also stated that the mutiny was not the only reason of
unjustified suspicion (which made it more reliable, legitimate and unbiased) on
overthrowing the Spanish governement. The deprivation of friars, which is not
generally true as they abuse their power (e.g. outright land grabbing), from the
involvement in civil government and handling universities were also added to the
unjustified cocnclusion, which was took advantage by the spaniards and reported to
the Spanish government without any concrete evidence that these are the causes of
the said mutiny in Cavite.
 Also, Edmund Plauchut’s account, which complemented the Filipino Version, gave
more a detailed information on how the mutiny started and have a more
understandable and factual statements.
2.) Do you believe in your heart that Rizal made the retraction?
 It is undeniably true that the retraction document of Rizal was, without a doubt, in
exitence but, despite of its actuality, I do not believe that Rizal made the retraction
because there’s only one eyewitness on writing of the document (Jesuit Friar Father
Vicente Balaguer) and only mere allegations was shown, which seems insufficient to
be valid. And with this, we cannot have a full assurance that Rizal wholeheartedly
wrote the whole retraction.
 Also, there’s a possibility that a coercion or blackmailing happend to Rizal, resulting
to the existence of the said document. Another reason that I do not believe on the
retraction was the fact that on the day of the execution of Rizal, the spaniards
published an article in all local papers that Rizal made a retraction. This is absolutely
questionable and suspicious in nature because knowing spaniards have dominance on
the Philippine Islands at this time around, they can easily manipulate the press, and
also the public that this is a fact without scientific methodology and contextual fact –
checking, observation or inquiry on the author of the retraction.
