How has the 20th and 21st century in education changed in terms of teacher’s role, core subjects,

instructional strategies, and assessment?

In terms of Teacher’s Role during the 20th century, the teacher mostly has all the power in the
class. What the teacher say is sometimes treated as the law that should not be broken. As a
student back then, you will only be doing what your teacher say you should do, no questions
asked because you only need to oblige. Therefore, teacher's back are often as an authoritative
figure. Teacher's Role during the 21st century however, is much more lax than its 20th century
counter part because they are perceived and/or threated as a facilitator for the most part. They let
the student take what they learned and apply it to various means, either through an activity or
other means, then the teacher would judge the student's work/output as it is. There is little to no
direct orders from the teacher on what the students need to do during an activity like a step by
step guide, the student would need to depend on their own knowledg, or sometimes wih their
classmates.

The Core Subjects of the education system during the 20th century are mostly academic in
nature, such as reading, english, math, science etc. It was like the education system during the
20th century just assumed that they just need to supply the students with knowledge that they
would otherwise would not have learned on their own. But now in the 21st century, there are
more than just the common subjects. Sure there are still those core subject but there are
additionals, the 21st century education system also instill in their students Life Skills, Learning
and Thinking Skills and ICT Literacy. Based on my own education, ICT Literacy has its own
subject teaching about Information and Media Literacy, as well as Life Skills although it wasn't
as consistent as ICT. For the most part Life Skills and Learning and Thinking Skills are very
subtle and usually incorporate in activities and/or assessment. At least that was my experience
with those subjects.

The Instructional Strategies done by the 20th century education system was more Teacher-
Oriented. They give more focused on the teacher dispersing knowledge to the student, since by
then the theory of multiple intelligence was not yet that prevalent and as a result they just
thought the learners all learn the same way, so they focused on quality educators. But as the 20th
century came to a close and the 21st century comes, the education system switch strategy to a
more Student-Oriented. With thia approach, students are given more freedom, became more
capable on relying on their own strength and taught more than just subjects but also aboit the real
world and life. The education system also incorporated strategies that would cater to different
learning types and adapted to the evolving times by incorporating technology into the education
system.
When it comes to Assessment, the 20th century mostly or entirely rely on secured test that would
be taken at the same time however, with varying content depending on specific grade levels. But
with the 21st century, test are still a big part of assessment especially during the end of Quarters,
Semesters and School Years. But it is no longer the only assessment that can be done to test
students' knowledge. Depending on the situation, the facilitator/teacher can use Interview,
Reporting, Observation, Essay or any other ways to know how much the students' learned much
like with the different approach in learning.
