 What is a symbol?
 How can I identify the Statue of Liberty?

Objectives
 After reading “The Statue of Liberty” and constructing the statue of liberty, the
students will be able to identify the key characteristics of the Statue of Liberty
and say what it stands for with 100% accuracy.

Materials and Equipment


 Book ~ Book “The Statue of Liberty” By Lucille Recht Penner
 Statue of Liberty Check in Ticket
 Symbols Coloring Book

Introduction:
o “Today class we are going to talk about another American National
Symbol. Does anyone remember what a symbol is? “A symbol is
something that stands for, or represents, something else.”

Anticipatory Set/Activating Learning Strategies


 “Has anyone ever been to New York?” Turn and talk to a neighbor about if you
have ever been to New York! In New York, there is a Statue. Does anyone know
what statue is in New York?
o Expected Answer: Statue of Liberty
 The Statue of Liberty is located in the New York Harbor on Liberty Island.”
 Students will move to the carpet to read a book about the Statue of Liberty

 Teacher will brain storm different ideas of what you can do when
you are at the statue of liberty with the students on smart board.
Teacher will model one example for the students and if they need
prompted teacher will prompt more idea.
 Examples: Look out the lookout, climb all the stairs, feed the ducks,
feel the water, etc.
 Students will write one thing they want to do at the statue of liberty
and then color lady liberty on the document.

 Teacher will read the directions of the check in ticket to the
students
 Students will complete the check in ticket using a clipboard.
 Students will sit around the room
 After they are finished return to their desk and color the Statue of
Liberty in their Coloring book. Students will put the coloring book in
their “Red: Under Construction Folder” once everyone has
completed the assignment.

Closure/Summarizing Strategy
 “You all did a great job learning about the Statue of Liberty.” Im so proud of all
your hard work! Next week we are going to learn about a special bird that
represents America! Anyone have any ideas?
o Answer: Eagle

Assessments/Evaluation
 Students will be given a Check in Ticket on the Statue of Liberty. The check in
ticket will directly reflect the lesson on the Statue of Liberty. The ticket has the
students identifying key characteristics of the statue and what country we got it
from.

Special Considerations
 Early Finishers
o Students may finish coloring the Statue of Liberty in their coloring book or
the American Flag page in their coloring book.
o Students can identify the parts of the lady. (worksheet provided)
 Remediation
o Teacher can review with students before the check more in detail.
 Enrichment
o Teacher can go into detail of why lady liberty changed color.
 Special Accommodations
o Teacher can provide a handwriting (ice cream paper) for students who
need better control of handwriting with lines.
