Data Communication
The term communication means ‘to share’.It is the process of exchanging
knowledge and information with each other.
Data communication
refers to the sharing of virtual messages with the help of
emails, messengers, phone calls, and various other electronic devices. It is the
process of sending and receiving data from various wired or wireless electronic
mediums.
Telecommunication, also known as
telecom, is the exchange of information over significantly large distances for
different purposes. It is a vast range of information transmitting technologies such
as mobile phones, land lines telephone,VOIP(Voice over Internet Protocol)and
broadcast network.
Functions of telecommunication

1. It establishes an interface between sender and receiver.

2. It controlles the flow of information.
3. It changes the transmission speed and the format of the
message.
4. It transmits messages from one electronic device to
another device.
Components of data communication

1. Message or Data: It is one of the components of data

communication which needs to be transmitted from
one device to another one.It can be a
vedio,text,audio,images or their combination.
2. Sender:It is the component of data communication
which initates the communication. It sends the data
amd messages to the destination or target.
3. Receiver:It is the component of the data
communication which receives the data and
messages sent from the sender. It is the destination or

4. Transmission Medium: It is the physical path for data

to travel to it’s destination. The sender sends the data and
messages from one end of the path and the receiver
receives from another end of the path. The medium can be
wired like twisted pair cable,fiber-optic cable, or wireless
like laser,radio waves,micro waves,e.t.c.
5. Protocol: A protocol is nothing but a set of rules that
applies on a full data communication system. It is like an
arrangement between the two devices to sucessflly
communicate with each other.
Transmission mode

The way in which data is transmitted from one device to

another device is called transmission mode.It is also known
as communication mode.

It is reffered to the mechanism of transferring

of data between two devices connected over a network.
It has 3 types.They are:
1. Simplex mode
2. Half duplex mode
3. Full duplex mode
Types of transmission mode

1. Simplex mode:
Transmission media

Transmission media is the physical path between the

transmitter and receiver in a data communication system. It
is the channel through which data is transmitted from one
place to another.
