PREFACE

This book provides a comprehensive guidelines and detailed procedures for Structural Analysis &
Design using STAAD.Pro. Book. Usage of STAAD.Pro for various structural engineering applications as
listed below are covered in detail.
 Structural analysis & design
 Earthquake resistant design
 Wind loading
 Foundation for vibrating machines
 Steel Design as per IS800

Book will help to understand practicing engineer’s and civil engineering students to understand
basic structural engineering concepts and its applications. Generally books in market covers basic
theory and application, however the book draws on examples, many of which are based on the use
of STAAD.Pro to solve real life problems. Most of the current publications in market focus mainly
on following aspects.
 Basic theory and applications of structural engineering problems using manual methods.
 Basic concepts and simple applications of STAAD.Pro.

Generally, solutions of complex structural engineering problems will depend on methodology

adopted by various practicing engineers. There are various methods to simulate and solve these
problems using STAAD.Pro. Wrong assumptions / considerations in simulating such problems in
STAAD.Pro can result in erroneous results; hence there is need for systematic procedures for
guiding new structural Engineer’s.

This book will guide the practicing Structural Engineer’s to develop good working practice in
simulating complex problems in STAAD.Pro. Further this will help to understand and interpret the
results. Author considers following advantages for practicing engineers
 Use right simulation method while using STAAD.Pro
 Help engineer to understand simulation of practical problems in STAAD.Pro
 Help engineer to interpret the results.

Thus book will enable engineer’s to adopt theoretically sound and practically viable structural
engineering solution using STAAD.Pro.

Examples in the book are solved using STAAD.Pro CONNECT Edition developed by M/s Bentley
systems. STAAD.Pro is intuitive, versatile user interface software accompanied by its powerful
analysis engine and design tools.

This book brings the subject fully up to date, including the latest trend, research, techniques and
much more. This naturally renders the book a useful reference guide and learning aid.

The book is organized in five chapters.

Chapter 1 is dedicated to the general introduction about STAAD, its allied package and other analysis
package available in the market. The criteria for choosing a suitable analysis package are based on
the feature of the specific engineering problems. Depending on complexity of the analysis, certain
software packages are found more suited to a particular application than others. The prominent
features of each notable software’s are discussed in detail. The chapter also includes general STAAD
facilities like the Local and Global coordinate system, types of structure, element types, support,
STAAD shortcuts etc.
Chapter 2 covers the earthquake resistant design of structure with emphasis on code-based
procedure for seismic analysis of structure along with its application in STAAD.pro. The chapter
introduces requirement of design parameters, important concepts and methodology to be
considered for earthquake loading. Methods like Equivalent static method, its limitation, Response
Spectrum method (RSM), Time history method for acceleration and Time History Matched to
Response Spectrum etc, along with their application in STAAD in discussed in detail. Use of Stiffness
modifier, Floor diaphragm option, modelling of brick infill, check for irregularities as per IS 1893
(Part 1) 2016 etc are included in the book. The chapter also covers ductility requirement of RC frame
structure and its application part using software.
Chapter 3 covers wind analysis of structure as per IS 875-Part 3-2015and its application in STAAD
model. Basic Concepts, pressure coefficient method, Force coefficient method and gust factor
method are included in the book.

Chapter 4 covers in detail dynamic analysis of foundation for vibrating machines supported on
tabletop foundation. Advance analysis like the Time History analysis is included in the book along
with discussion on results and conclusion.

Chapter 5 covers solve example of a steel frame, its analysis and design using IS 800:2007 in
STAAD.Pro

Chapter 6 covers miscellaneous topics like the warning and errors in STAAD software and other
miscellaneous command.
