Objectives:
- Educators will be able to demonstrate the correct strategies and safety behind the game of
Broomball
- Educators will be able to instruct students on the history and equipment behind the game
NASPE Standards:
General Standards:
- Standard 1: The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of
motor skills and movement patterns.
- Standard 2: The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles,
strategies and tactics related to movement and performance
Specific Standards:
- Refines activity-specific movement skills in 1 or more lifetime activities (outdoor
pursuits, individual-performance activities, aquatics, net/wall games, or target games).25

Outcomes:
- Students will be able to grasp the rules of the game Broomball
- Students will gain knowledge of the strategies and tactics behind the game, which are
similar to hockey
- Students will know how to properly strike and hit the ball into the opponent’s goal and
score
- Students will understand the history of the game amongst the different equipment needed
- Students will engage in a competitive environment playing Broomball, which is known to
be a lifetime activity

Lesson Outline/Instruction:
History:
- Vikings engaged in a brutal, often-deadly sport called Knattleikr
- Today, many believe Knattleikr’s closest descendant to be broomball, a less violent
version of the sport.
- May have originated in Duluth, Minnesota
- The United States started out with 10 players on the ice per team. By 1967, it had
dropped to 8 players per team. Some leagues still play eight-person broomball. By 1980,
the rules changed to 6 players per team.
- Broomball is played on a lake, a pond, an ice hockey rink or the gym floor
- It is played with rules and strategies similar to those of hockey.
- Some players wear padded, spongy shoes for grip on the ice.
- The object of the game is to strike a broomball with specially designed brooms into the
opponents net.
Key Words/Phrases:
- Goaltender--A player who stands in front of the goal trying to stop a score
- Interference--any type of holding, shoving, or blocking an opponent
- Slashing--swinging the broom to hit an opponent or their broom
- Cross checking--throwing oneself at or on an opponent
- High broom--contacting the ball or an opponent with the broom held above the shoulders
- Power play--when a team has the advantage in the number on offense
- Stick handling--using alternating taps of both sides of the broom to move the ball
(dribbling)
Review of Previous Skills:
- Demonstrating proper gear & clothing for the cold environment
- Balance on the snow/ice
Safety:
- Brooms must be kept below the waist at all times.
- Throwing the stick at the ball or to the ice surface is illegal.
- Kicking the broomball is illegal. But, you may use your foot to stop the ball
Class Organization:
- Sitting/Standing inside for lecture aspect
- Split class into two groups of 6-8 for drills Drills on Pond
Teaching Strategies:
- Loud Projection
- Large v Small group time to maintain attention
- Competitive atmosphere
- Proper & clear instruction
Modifications:
- Gym Broomball (instead of ice)
- Shorter sticks
- Regulation goals rather than Broomball size
- Foam sticks rather than plastic/rubber
- Soft balls rather than regulation ball
