Lesson Outline/Instruction:
History:
- Vikings engaged in a brutal, often-deadly sport called Knattleikr
- Today, many believe Knattleikr’s closest descendant to be broomball, a less violent
version of the sport.
- May have originated in Duluth, Minnesota
- The United States started out with 10 players on the ice per team. By 1967, it had
dropped to 8 players per team. Some leagues still play eight-person broomball. By 1980,
the rules changed to 6 players per team.
- Broomball is played on a lake, a pond, an ice hockey rink or the gym floor
- It is played with rules and strategies similar to those of hockey.
- Some players wear padded, spongy shoes for grip on the ice.
- The object of the game is to strike a broomball with specially designed brooms into the
opponents net.

Equipment (proper fit, parts/names of equipment):

- Boots--These shoes have a tough exterior with rubber soles that grip the ice rather than
sliding
- Brooms--Sticks feature a broom-like knob on the end rather than a blade
- Helmets--Necessary for broomball given how easy it is to slip on the ice
- Gloves--Gloves will help keep your hands warm
- Broomballs--have little hexagonal panels molded together and is fairly soft and squeezy
to the touch

Key Words/Phrases:
- Goaltender--A player who stands in front of the goal trying to stop a score
- Interference--any type of holding, shoving, or blocking an opponent
- Slashing--swinging the broom to hit an opponent or their broom
- Cross checking--throwing oneself at or on an opponent
- High broom--contacting the ball or an opponent with the broom held above the shoulders
- Power play--when a team has the advantage in the number on offense
- Stick handling--using alternating taps of both sides of the broom to move the ball
(dribbling)
