SYNOPSIS

Title of thesis: - Effect of the temperature variation on building structures

The thermal stresses can be comparable or even exceed in magnitude the stresses
induced by the live and dead loading in case of no or little thermal insulation and could
lead to severe damages if not considered during the design phase. Most of researches are
concentrated in studying the temperature effect in correlation with shrinkage and creep on
concrete elements. Few researches are extended to study the thermal response of a
complete structure (bridge) due to seasonal temperature.
There is a need to establish a comparative study for thermal effects on various
structures having different materials, geometry and support conditions. There is also a
need to determine a component of temperature stresses in proportion with the stresses due
to other loads such as gravity, wind or earthquake for various types of structures. This will
establish the significance of temperature loading among the designers and the effects of
temperature variation will always be considered in the design by building planners and
designers.
The objectives of proposed work are to define a standard approach for designing of
buildings subjected to thermal actions. It is proposed to use the finite element software
‘ETABS’ as a tool for this study. The results of ETABS will be validated using manual
calculations for a 2-D frame subjected to temperature loading. Aanalytical models using
ETABS will be developed for different model structures (first for RCC G + 5 building and
later by changing criteria like plan dimensions, number of storeys, material, support
conditions etc.) The effects of temperature variation will be compared for different model
structures to determine the component of temperature stresses in the structural elements
with respect to total stress due to other actions.
