Question: How will you differentiate a unit operation from a unit process?

Give at least 5 (each)

applications of unit operations and unit processes in our daily lives.

While both unit operations and unit processes are activities that involves transformation of a material,
they differ in such that unit operations involve only a transformation or change of material through
physical means alone while unit processes involve both physical and chemical changes. For unit
operations, it simply involves separation (e.g. by means of heat or mass transfer), transportation,
mixing, blending or size reduction—all which involves physical change alone starting from the first
material to the second one. Unit processes involves the conversion of a material into other types of
material or product chemically; for this process the material’s chemical composition changes to a
difference composition or compound.

Some of the applications of unit operations in our daily lives are:

 Drying of clothes
 Resizing old clothes
 Extraction of orange juice from an orange
 Distillation/filtration of water
 Mincing of meat

Some of the applications of unit processes are:

 Chlorination
 Nitration
 Redox reaction
 Polymerization
 Neutralization
