REFLECTION PAPER

The curriculum is a means followed by the teachers and students for achieving the set goals and
the aims or objectives of education being provided in the school. Curriculum, in every sense, is supposed
to be used for all experiences.

The term curriculum refers to the lessons and academic contents taught in a school or in a
specific course or program. In dictionaries, curriculum is often defined as the courses offered by a
school, but it is rarely used in such a general sense in schools. Curriculum design is a statement which
identifies the elements of the curriculum, states what their relationships are to each other and indicates
the principles of organization and the requirements of that organization for the administrative
conditions under which it is to operate.

There are three basic types of curriculum design─ subject-centered, learner-centered, and
problem-centered design. What I learned from the discussion is that the subject-centered curriculum
design describes what needs to be studied and how it should be studied. It revolves around a particular
subject matter or discipline. In other words, this type of curriculum design tends to focus on the subject
rather than the individual. Second is the learner-centered curriculum. Learner-centered curriculum
design takes each individual’s needs, interests, and goals into consideration. That is to say, it
acknowledges that students are not uniform and adjusts to those student needs. Thus, it is meant to
empower learners and allow them to shape their education through choices. The third and last
curriculum design is problem-centered. This design focus on teaching students how to look at a problem
and come up with a solution to the problem. Students are thus exposed to real-life issues, which helps
them develop skills that are transferable to the real world.

To sum it up, curriculum design is a term used to describe the purposeful, deliberate, and
systematic organization within a class or course. In other words, it is a way for teachers to plan
instruction. When teachers design a curriculum, they identify what will be done, who will do it, and what
schedule to follow. However, a curriculum design can be made either one person or more and is not
intended only for the teachers but more on or primarily on the students. In addition, a learner-centered
curriculum design is the key vehicle that can shift from traditional systems of delivery to new ways of
engaging in the learning enterprise. Thus, a strong curriculum design must allow the student’s choice
and voice throughout learning experiences.
