Project: “Analysis of design principles applied to an existing building”

Week Material

3 Group Research Project Introduced; Group Research Project Assigned

11 PART A DUE DATE:

Wednesday of week 11 at 5pm. Deductions for every 24 hours missed. Digital Submission of Research Project Parts A and B to be uploaded
on Blackboard.
11-14 PART B Peer Evaluation DUE DATE:
The end of day for week 11,12, 13 and 14 pending each Team’s assigned Peer Review by 5pm. Deductions for every 24 hours missed.
Digital Submission of Research Project Parts A and B to be uploaded on Blackboard.

The purpose of this term project is to allow each student the opportunity to learn through careful examination and precedent study of a significant
architectural example. Students are to present this information in both written and digital form. Groups are encouraged to work together collaboratively in
order that all students gain a full understanding of their case study project. Each group will be composed of 4 students .
Research should be conducted using a variety of sources including books, architectural journal articles, newspaper articles, web sites,
personal site visits, etc... In addition, use the information provided to you by Andrea Hall, Reference & Instruction Librarian at George Brown
College and Metro Archives located at Macpherson & Spadina (if access is allowed during COVID-19).

1. Scope of Project

Part A (40% of grade)

Each group will be assigned an existing building (case study) and students, in their groups, will then conduct research using a variety of sources as outlined above.
Groups will then complete a “graphic and visual representation” of their research and anaylsis, by producing a Presentation that includes the application and
identification of design properties/principles learned in class (lectures from week 01-10 ) to their selected building.

Part B (10% of grade)

Students, individually, will complete a peer review/ analysis of an instructor selected group (meaning the instructor will provide you the group number that you will
watch and evaluate). The peer review form will be provided by the instructor in week 10 for students to complete and submit via Blackboard after the group they are
to evaluate presents.

2. Content

PART A (40%)
a) Research Component
Groups will research the following
× A brief history of the building/project
× Biographical information on the Architect/Designer
× Biographical information on the client/patron
× Site context information,
× Building information (using the list of images/ drawings below)

Each project may be illustrated/introduced by using any and as many of the following drawings/images:
× Key/context plan, aerial photo
× Site context photos
× Site plan (architectural drawing)
× Floor plans, sections, elevations, architectural details (drawings),
× Presentation drawings

Project: “Analysis of design principles applied to an existing building”

× Structural drawings,
× Interior/exterior photographs,
× Construction photographs,
× 3-d drawings and images,
× Include photographs/images of other Buildings/Projects with similar architectural characteristics.

b) Graphic/Visual Component

Research gathered and submitted to be included in the presentation plus the following:

APPLICATION OF DESIGN PRINCIPLES

× Drawings/Sketches showing several applications of the Design Principles discussed during lessons.
× Use of colors, graphic elements and symbols (arrows, labels) to identify the Design Principles on photographs and/or drawings.
× Describe project purpose/use,
× Material used in the construction
× Design properties of materials and reasons for being used

× Student / Group generated Questions of their presentation specific to their Analysis. Groups are to generate 4 questions for the class to
answer in the form of multiple-choice questions.

Example outline of documentation:

× Title of the building/project

× Full names of group members
× Date
× Course name and professor
× Table of contents / Agenda
× Introduction
× References and credits related to research sources (Book, Websites Links).

Part B: (10%)

× Each student to complete a Peer review provided by Instructor.

3. Submission Requirements

PART A – BUILDING/PROJECT INFORMATION RESEARCH and STUDENT LED PRESENTATIONS

• Submission to be formatted in such a way as to ensure that the research is presented in a logical, informative and engaging manner; the sections above
are guidelines pending the type of presentation students choose.
• Edit all text and images to eliminate redundancies.
• Spelling and grammar-count have a third-party person proof-read the work.
• Include a detailed bibliography citing all your sources of information; websites cannot make up more than 1/2 of the bibliography references.
• The digital submission is due Week 11. A folder Named “Term Project Submission Part A” will be made available in the ARCH1060 Blackboard link
where only one person from each group will upload the final presentation for the group in a PDF format.
• Produce a high-quality, 8-10-minute Presentation using both research graphics and written text.
• Presentation to be formatted in such a way as to ensure that the research is presented in a logical, informative and engaging manner;
• The presentation must be completely “self-contained” and “stand alone” – meaning it will consist of a single file containing all the required information.
The file will be then uploaded on Blackboard in PDF or audio or video format. Discussions on submissions can be discussed with the Instructor by Week
09.
• Images should be of a high graphic clarity

Project: “Analysis of design principles applied to an existing building”

• Presentation should be a balanced combination of both still images/photos and text;

• All text on any slides must be written by the group and not simply copied from websites, books, magazines, etc...
• Only those students who are listed and identified on the presentation introduction page will receive a grade for the project.
• If using a PowerPoint or similar program, each slide in the presentation must be numbered and must identify which of the group’s members is its
author/name and student’s number. If a video or another format is used, provide a list on each student’s responsibility separately.
• The entire group’s presentation must be edited to be consistent in format; colours, text, etc.
• Each group will be required to compile 3-4 questions for the class to answer (via polling or other means).

PART B – PEER ANALYSIS

• Students will be provided with a form from the instructor to complete during weeks 11-14
• Students will be paired with one group to evaluate and provide constructive criticism on their presentation
• The submission of the form will be in a folder “Term Project Part B Submission” in Blackboard.

• Component
4. Research Guidelines

Use/Purpose Context Use/purpose, info on building/project and architect, info on client/

Site Context Where is it located? Why? What surrounds it? patron

Architectural Context Identify and describe what “style” the building designed & built in; examples of this style – both
internationally and locally.

Application of Design Identify and describe what the design principles learned in class that can be applied to the
Principles building/project.

Building Materials Identify and describe the materials used in the construction of the building, and their relationship and
functionality to the design principles identified.

• Each group’s member will contribute equally and co-operate to provide the material that will be included in the project. Ideally, a student should be
selected within the group as “Project Manager” who shall:
× Establish a standardized format for the presentation
× Arrange for meetings and research times within the group
× Ensure all group members are assigned specific tasks
× Ensure all group members are completing their respective components of the project
× Collect all group members PowerPoint or equivalent slides /info to incorporate into one final group presentation
× Arrange for upload of digital copy into Blackboard folder
