SENTENCES WITH MULTIPLE CLAUSES
CLAUSES
Clause : a clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb (Understanding and Using
English Grammar by Betty Schrampfer Azar)
Independent clause : An independent clause is a complete sentence. It contains the main subject and verb of
(main clause) a sentence.
Dependent clause : A dependant clause is not a complete sentence. It must be connected to an
(sub clause) independent clause
Note: a sentence is a complete thought, group of words that express a statement, question etc.

5. Use Past perfect tense and Present perfect tense correctly, and use correct tense with time expressions
The present perfect refers to the period of time from the past until the present.
Jim has lived in Los Angles for ten years.
This sentence means that Jim has lived in Los Angeles for ten years up to now. Jim is still living in Los
Angeles.
The past perfect refers to a period of time that started in the past and ended in the past, before
something else happened in the past.
Jim had lived in Los Angeles for ten years when he moved to San Diego.
This sentence means that Jim lived in Los Angeles for ten years in the past before he moved to San
Diego in the past. He no longer lives in Los Angeles.
Note:
Because the past perfect begins in the past and ends in the past, it is generally not correct in the same
sentence with the present tense.
