CHAPTER I
SENTENCES WITH MULTIPLE CLAUSES

CLAUSES

Clause : a clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb (Understanding and Using
English Grammar by Betty Schrampfer Azar)
Independent clause : An independent clause is a complete sentence. It contains the main subject and verb of

(sub clause) independent clause
Note: a sentence is a complete thought, group of words that express a statement, question etc.

ADJECTIVE CLAUSES (clauses as adjectives)

An adjective clause is a dependant clause (a sub clause) which modifies a noun.

the sentence is correct.

 The past perfect refers to a period of time that started in the past and ended in the past, before
something else happened in the past.
Jim had lived in Los Angeles for ten years when he moved to San Diego.
This sentence means that Jim lived in Los Angeles for ten years in the past before he moved to San

sentence with the present tense.
