Introduction to Cultural Exercises

The Montessori Cultural Studies curriculum provides children with an opportunity to explore the
larger world. As part of a rich exploration of the different cultures of the world, students learn
about the people, terrain and animals of each continent as they study them in the course of the
three-year cycle.

The Montessori aims for cultural studies is to help the child:

A -  develop his/her personality

B – adapt to his/her culture
C – become and independent useful member of his society

Cultural Studies also introduces children to the physical world that surrounds them, providing
them with the opportunity to explore real things, and learn the scientific names for plants and
animals. Areas studied include geography, zoology, botany, physics, earth science and social
studies.

Significance of Cultural Exercises:

During early years the child is quick to grasp culture. He absorbs most of the culture around him
during 0 to 6 years.The child’s natural ability to absorb the cultural understanding and norms of
life prevalent around him are universal regardless of the fact that the child is born in America or
a primitive tribe of Africa.
The sensitive period for culture, according to most psychologists, also sustains through 2 to 5
years of age. It is crucial to expose children to direct cultural experiences, including ways of
living, history, sciences, geography and arts, during the absorbent period to maximize
development in this area. Cultural subjects are character forming and they cultivate the spirit of
the child. Children develop cultural values naturally and undoubtedly, but still something lacks
in today’s complex world, most of which has been designed by the adults for the adults, which
hinders the child’s fullest cultural development.

Giving students the Cultural lessons and skills needed to make discoveries about our world is
responsive to their developmental curiosity and aided by their absorbent minds. By introducing
lessons about the intricacies of our world early in their education, students are exposed to
concepts like political geography, Earth science, and engineering, and are able to speak to these
concepts at a young age.

Students also begin to realize, at a young age, how interconnected these subjects are. In a
Montessori classroom, students experience new ideas through hands-on learning and by using
Montessori materials. These materials are designed for each developmental level and become
more complex as the grades progress, so that a student revisits a concept many times, but through
materials and lessons most appropriate to their current cognitive ability. This process is a form of
social learning where students are provided with the necessary support and guidance to progress
from one level to the next.

There are strong reasons to support the point that it should be the local culture of the land which
should be incorporated in the Montessori Curriculum and not some foreign culture.
