Name:

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Date:

Unit/Subject: Mathematics

Instructional Plan Title: Patterns

Lesson Summary and The students have been studying about different colors objects and
Focus: sequence. The lesson will enable students to understand the logic of
pattern formation and to start making their own patterns.

Classroom and Student There are thirty students in the class. Students are of mixed ability and
Factors/Grouping: belong to different cultures and communities. The classroom is set in
group seating arrangement and is equipped with technology. There is
multimedia projector for the showcase of video, book reading or
PowerPoint. A carpet is placed in front of the projector so that students
can view and discuss easily. Class rules are displayed appropriately and
reinforced time to time.

National/State Learning PK.AL.4. Exhibits curiosity, interest, and willingness to learn new things
Standards: and have new experiences

PK.AL.1 Actively engages in play as a means of exploration and learning

Specific Learning Given math manipulative, students will be able to define patterns and
Target(s)/Objectives: determine the pattern and the rule for displayed manipulative pattern.

Given resources, students will be able to draw a pattern and challenge

their peers to determine the pattern created by them.

LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Academic Language Pattern: The way things are organized is a pattern.

Repeating pattern: A repeating pattern is a kind of pattern in which the rule

only continues to repeat over and over again.

Resources, Materials, Twisto

Equipment, and toy block cars
Technology: pom-poms
magnet shapes
popsicles
a paper
two different colored pens

Section 2: Instructional Planning

Anticipatory Set Time

Needed
 I will welcome the students and asked them to sit in a circle.
 I will introduce the topic of the lesson “Patterns”. 10 min

 I will ask students: What is a Pattern?

 I will explain that the pattern is something that comes in certain order and repeats.
 I will also inform that we can find patterns all around them.

Multiple Means of Representation Time

Needed
 I will give an example of making a pattern with toy block cars. I will show the toy cars and
will show the way patterns are made. I will show a pattern, repeat the pattern and will 30 min
ask students to predict what will be next in the pattern.
 I will give another example of making patterns with colored twisto. I will show a pattern,
repeat the pattern and will ask students to predict what will be next in the pattern.
 I will show magnet shapes triangle and square as an example. I will arrange the pattern
as triangle and square and will repeat that. I will ask students to predict the next shape of
the pattern so that the understanding, and focus of the students can also be assessed.
 I will then rearrange the pattern with the same shapes as two squares and one triangle
so that students might differentiate many patterns with one example.
 I will also discuss the rule of making these patterns- ABAB or AABB or ABBA or
ABABBA etc.
 I will ask them to differentiate between the two set of patterns made with same shapes. I
will discuss meaning of repeated pattern then.

Explain how you will differentiate materials for each of the following groups:

 English language learners (ELL):

LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

I will provide definition of pattern and repeated pattern in native language of students and will add
a picture for better understanding.

 Students with special needs:

I will provide definition in audio for student with visual impairment. Flash cards of vocabulary with
visuals will be given to students with learning and cognitive disability. One to one instruction will
also be provided.

 Students with gifted abilities:

Not needed

 Early finishers (those students who finish early and may need additional
resources/support):

Not needed.

Multiple Means of Engagement Time

Needed
 I will provide different colored pom-poms to students in pairs and will ask them to create
as many patterns as they can in pairs. 30 min
 I will divide students in groups and will provide colored popsicles to each group. I will
instruct each group to create as many patterns as they can as they have to challenge
their peers to determine the rule of the pattern.
 After groups have completed the task, I will ask them to move from one group to another
determining the rule and writing it on the chart paper placed besides the popsicles
patterns created by groups.
 I will have a whole class discussion and will discuss patterns created by the groups.

Explain how you will differentiate activities for each of the following groups:
 English language learners (ELL):

I will provide instructions in native language and will group them in mixed ability groups for
support.

 Students with special needs:

I will group students with high ability during group work so that they have support.

 Students with gifted abilities:

The will be guided to support their peers.

 Early finishers (those students who finish early and may need additional
resources/support):
Not needed

LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Multiple Means of Expression Time

Needed
I will provide a drawing paper and two colored markers to each child. I will ask them to create
and draw patterns using their imagination. I will also ask them to determine and write the rule of
20 min
pattern on the given paper.

Explain how you will differentiate assessments for each of the following groups:
 English language learners (ELL):

The instructions will be given in native language for additional support.

 Students with special needs:

They will be asked to create two to three patterns only.

 Students with gifted abilities:

They will be asked to support the students who are struggling with creating the patterns.

 Early finishers (those students who finish early and may need additional
resources/support):

They will also be asked to help their classmates and discuss with them the patterns that were
created.

Extension Activity and/or Homework Time

Needed
Identify and describe any extension activities or homework tasks as appropriate. Explain how the
extension activity or homework assignment supports the learning targets/objectives. As required
10 min s
by your instructor, attach any copies of homework at the end of this template.

Create three to four patterns using drawing paper and colored markers.
