GIVING ADVICE: WRITING EXERCISE

Situation 2
Alvern: Good afternoon, Madam. Do you need help crossing the street?
Melly: That would be so nice, young men, thank you very much.
Alvern: If I may, Ma’am, I think it’s better if you don’t go places all by yourself like this.
Melly: Oh, it’s okay. My granddaughter usually accompanies me when I go out, but she has
dance practice today. Thank you for your concern, my dear, you’re very kind.

Situation 3
Hannah: *sneezes*
Jane: Do you have a cold, Hannah?
Hannah: I’m afraid so. It’s colder here than I thought it would be.
Jane: Of course it’s cold, it’s an ice skating rink. You should’ve stayed home and rested.
Hannah: Yeah, I guess you’re right.
Jane: Come on, I’ll drive you home.

Situation 4
Grace: What’s wrong, May? Is there something wrong with the food?
May: No, Grace, the food is delicious. I just have a toothache.
Grace: Does it hurt really bad? Have you gone to see your dentist?
May: It does, and no, I haven’t gone to the dentist. He’s just got married and is now on
honeymoon.
Grace: You should go to the dentist on Setiabudi Street. He’s a great doctor and it’s not very
expensive. I can give you their phone number if you want.
May: That would be great, Grace, thank you. I’ll schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
Situation 5
Mom: Chrissie, your room is so messy. There are also dust and plastic bottle everywhere.
Chrissie: Fine, Mom, I’ll clean it later.
Mom: You should clean it now. The later you put it off, the harder it will be for you to do it.
Chrissie: *thinks for a few seconds* You’re right, Mom. I should clean it now.
Mom: Don’t forget to sweep and mop the floor.

Situation 6
Mrs. Ross: Welcome to Ross’ Diner. Can I get your order?
Hailey: Yes. Can I have a cheeseburger and a chocolate milkshake, please?
Mrs. Ross: Okay, will that be all?
Hailey: Yes, thank you.
Mrs. Ross: You should order the blueberry frosted doughnut, too. It’s a new dish on our menu
and it’s really good!
Hailey: Okay, sure. A cheeseburger, strawberry milkshake, and some cinnamon sugar doughnut
holes, please.
Mrs. Ross: Coming right up.

Situation 7
Nicholas: You look pretty stressed, Katie. What homework is that?
Katie: Math. I don’t understand how to answer these questions because I had a fever last week,
so I didn’t go to school. My classmates have choir practice today, so they can’t help me with the
homework.
Nicholas: Oh, too bad I don’t understand Math either. You should go to your teacher and ask her
to teach you.
Katie: Yeah, I guess I should. I’ll go to the teachers’ lounge right now. See you later, Nick.

Situation 8
Bryce: Riley? Hi!, it’s been such a long time since we last saw each other.
Riley: Oh, Bryce, Hi! Yeah, it’s been a while, how are you?
Bryce: I’m great, I just got a promotion, actually. Here I am on my way to work. Where are you
off to?
Riley: Congratulations on that promotion. I have a job interview at Goliath National Bank center.
Bryce: Well, in that case, you should take the subway instead of the bus. The bank is still quite
far from the nearest bus station. It’s closer from the subway station. The subway’s faster, too.
Riley: Really? Thanks, Bryce. I am running a bit late. See you later.

Situation 9
Addison: Hi, June. I heard you were back from your trip to Spain with your parents. How was it?
June: Hey, Addi. Yeah, I got home yesterday. It was very fun. How’s your summer so far?
Addison: Not so good, to be honest. Tim and I broke up last week. I was heartbroken. Still am,
actually.
June: Oh, Margie, I am so sorry. I’m here if you ever want to talk about it.
Addison: Thanks, June, but talking about it makes me even sadder.
June: Well, come on, Addison. It’s summer vacation. You can take all the time you need to be
sad about Tim, but you shouldn’t let that breakup ruin your summer. It’s time to have fun.
Addison: *sighs* You’re right. I needed to hear that. Thank you, June. Let’s go to the theme
park tomorrow and have fun, then!

Situation 10
Avani: Howdy, neighbor. What do you got there? Need a hand with those bags? Looks heavy.
Daisy: Oh, no, I got it, thanks. It’s just some takeout. I’m starving.
Avani: Are you having friends over later?
Daisy: No, it’s all for me. I know, I know, I shouldn’t eat this much because I’ll get fat. But I had
a promo code from McDonald’s and it would be such a waste.
Avani: Well, it’s still not good for you to eat all that junk food at once, or at all, in that matter.
It’s not healthy, Daisy. I think it would be a better idea if you just share it with other people.
Daisy: Yeah, I guess you’re right. Do you want a burger? I got three burgers in this bag.
Avani: No, thanks, Daisy, I’m good. You should share some of that food with Jane, though.
Daisy: Okay. I’ll see if she’s home. See you, Avani.
