Tuazon Week 11: Enrichment Activity

The Village by M. Night Shyamalan

Before I give my reaction about the movie, let me give first a summary of the
said story. The story happened in a village where a small population of people is living
which I think being isolated from civilization or they live around the 1900s. They live a
simple life where science and technology do not emerge yet however when night
comes their fear and anxiety were seen as they heard the bell rang. Those villagers
believe that their creatures living inside the forest or surrounding woods which they
called “Those We Don’t Speak Of”. Lucius asks permission from the Elders to pass
through the woods to get medical supplies but he was denied then Ivy a blind person
confessed that she loves Lucius and he also loves her. They want to get married
however Noah a person with a mental disability loves Ivy and he stabbed Lucius with
a knife. To get medicine Ivy was determined to pass the woods to save Lucius and
Edward the Chief Elder agreed to let Ivy pass through the forest. As she traveled, she
tricked the creature to fall in a hole who is Noah. Then she climbs over the wall and
saw a person. She asked for help to get the medicines and that person gave it to her
after taking it from his station. Ivy left after getting the medicines without knowing the
truth. Lastly, she comes and tells Lucius that she got medicine and has returned. So
that is what I understand when I watch the movie, I do not prefer watching movies with
real people because I’m into anime. Furthermore, I got scared easily by just hearing
the sounds in the movie and I do not like the creepy atmosphere, in short, I do not like
to watch a movie with horror or thriller genre. The story has many plot twists such as I
think they actually live in the 1900s but surprisingly they just live in a place or wildlife
which is far from civilization where flying is not allowed. I thought the elders do not
know what is happening in the village however they are the one who is behind the
legend that there’s a creature living inside the forest. I also believe that the creatures
are a ghost or wild animals living inside the woods as I do not watch movies usually so
I do not know some ideas but the reality is the creatures are a member of their village
in order to scare the people to not leave that place. Another plot twist focuses on
elders, the boxes that they have contains objects with a sentimental value that is
related to their traumas. Those elders are people who suffered mentality due to the
death of their loved ones so they decide to live in a place where the outside world will
not disturb them. The lesson I learned from watching it is all about fear. As I watch the
movie, I want to stop it because I’m too scared due to the creepy atmosphere and
background music. I realized that people have a choice to either face and embrace
their fear even though it hurts a lot or just let it consume us and live with fear all the
time.
