Background:

Customer requested Wärtsilä representative to replace crankshaft seal due to

excessive oil leak. Last overhaul at 35469 running hours. 16706 running hours since
last overhaul.

Description of Work:

1. Exchange crankshaft seal

In order to replace crankshaft seal turning gear was removed to gain access to end
cover from operational side of the engine. End cover was removed. Old seal was
removed. Removed V-ring was original since engine was built with ten years in
operations. Rubber was quite week and sealing lip did not provide enough tension
against the end cover mating surface. New V-ring was installed. Markings on the new
crankshaft seal were recorded as follow:
FORSHEDA V-RING V-500A 1520-2
Crankshaft end cover was cleaned and reinstalled. Turning gear was reinstalled.

Engine during test run. Engine was started and test run for 45 minutes. No oil leaks
were detected in between crankshaft and crankshaft seal.
Recommendations

- Engine is due for 12000 hours overhaul. Wärtsilä recommends starting engine
overhaul as soon as possible. Gas blow buys can significantly increase crank case
pressure and contribute to oil leaks through the crankshaft seal.
