HEALTH & SAFETY – THINGS TO REMEMBER

RGIS is concerned about the safety of its employees, and it is the policy of RGIS that
accident prevention is of primary importance. It is the intention of RGIS management to
provide safe and healthy working conditions and to establish and insist upon safe
practices at all times by all employees.

It is the responsibility of each manager and supervisor to ensure all employees are
trained in and follow safe work procedures, to correct any unsafe or unhealthy condition,
and to maintain safe and healthy working conditions.

It is the responsibility of each employee to follow proper and safe work procedures, to
observe all safety regulations pertaining to work, to co-operate in attaining the objective
of an accident free workplace, and to report any unsafe conditions to a manager or
supervisor immediately.

We normally conduct our work in a retail environment, but maybe times when you are
required, to work in a warehouse environment. You must comply with any local Health &
Safety Briefings you are given prior to starting work, and also any mandatory Health &
Safety Signs which are displayed in the area you are working in. Here is a reminder of
the safe work practices that will ensure an accident free workplace.

FOOTWEAR - Proper footwear makes a big difference with regards to safety. Low
heeled shoes with non skid soles are recommended.

SLIPS, TRIPS AND FALLS - Doorways and floor surfaces must always be considered as
potential slip and fall sites. Less obvious are the uneven floor surfaces that exist
between the sales floor and the back room, and the changing skid resistance where
different floor surfaces meet. Always be on the lookout for items on the floor. This
could be spills, boxes or merchandise.

YOUR IMMEDIATE AREA - While working on the sales floor, auditors are concentrating
on the items directly in front of them and can sometimes fail to notice potential hazards.
Anything sticking out of a shelf, something on the floor, even other people can become a
hazard! Remember to remain aware of your surroundings by periodically glancing
around you. Obey any Health & Safety Signs which are displayed.

BACKROOMS/STOCKROOMS - Backrooms were never intended for the general public

so they tend to have narrow passageways and poor lighting. Potentially hazardous
obstacles are frequently encountered as employees move merchandise, displays,
fixtures, and other store equipment and machinery such as forklifts or pallet jacks. Stay
alert. Keep an eye on the floor for cracks in the cement, paper, cardboard or products,
and look up to watch for items protruding from the shelving units.

OVERHEAD WORK - When counting overhead or top shelves, always be aware of the
impact your actions will have. It is very easy to knock products off a shelf or a peg
hook. This could easily cause injury to anyone walking below or near you.

RM – The RM can be used in either hand but must always be used with the hand strap.
When moving merchandise ensure you place the RM on a flat surface. When climbing
ladders ensure one hand is supporting your weight on the ladder. The ladder you are
using must be forward facing. Before you start counting make sure your weight is
balanced and you support yourself with the other hand. When you feel your posture is
comfortable and secure begin counting.

LADDERS – With the exception of high rise ladders, RGIS ladders should be used at all
times. All ladders come with warnings about its proper use. Observe these cautions as
well as the condition of any ladder before you use it. Ensure rubber safety feet are not
missing and the frame and steps of the ladder are intact. Avoid leaning to either side,
which will shift your weight and could cause the ladder to slip or topple. Climbing down
from a ladder is often more difficult than climbing up. Take the extra time necessary to
steady yourself with both hands while looking down to ensure a safe footing. Any broken
ladders must not be used and must be handed to the supervisor who will dispose of
them.

PROPER LIFTING TECHNIQUE

 Test every load before you lift by pushing lightly with your hand or foot to see
how easily it moves. This will give you an idea how heavy it is.
 Remember, a small size does not always mean a light load.
 Make sure the weight is balanced and packed so it won't shift.
 Be sure you have a tight grip on the object before you lift it.
 Use slow and smooth movements (hurried, jerky movements can strain your back
muscles)
 Keep your body facing the object while you lift it (twisting while lifting can hurt
your back)
 Keep the load close to your body (Reaching out to lift and carry an object may
hurt your back)
 "Lifting with your legs" should be done only when you can straddle the load.
Bend your knees, (NOT your back) to pick up the load. Keep your back straight.
 Try to carry the load in the space between your shoulder and your waist (this
puts less strain on your back muscles)

LOADING/UNLOADING
 Inspect the load to be lifted for sharp edges, slivers and wet or greasy spots.
 Wear gloves when lifting or handling objects with sharp or splintered edges.
 Inspect the route over which the load is to be carried. It should be in plain view
and free of obstructions or spillage that could cause tripping or slipping.
 Consider the distance the load is to be carried. Recognize the fact your gripping
power may weaken over long distances.
 If the load is not easily within your lifting capacity, get help.

COMPANY VEHICLES
 When travelling in any company vehicle seat belts must be worn by all
passengers.
 All company vehicles are non smoking.
 Share driving on long journeys.
 If the driver is tired they are to take a break.
 Report any poor drivers to the District Manager.

To comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. You are required to
sign a declaration that you have received Health and Safety Training prior to
commencing employment with RGIS. That you also will undertake any Health
& Safety refresher training when necessary.
