these challenges. The authors suggest us four-step approach. Following them we can be more
confident.

Four steps are following: the first step - understand the kind of choice you are making. The second
step - identify the information your audience needs. The third step - craft a message that conveys
this information clearly and respectfully. The fourth step - after you send the message, evaluate the
outcome and respond as needed.

these challenges. The authors suggest us four-step approach. Following them we can be more

Then she explains each approach. We should recognize whether we’re facing ethical dilemma or
potential ethical lapse. If a person lies in his resume or tells the customer he can finish his project
by a particular day when he knows he can’t, he’s committing an ethical lapse. Or if a person runs a
company which is in trouble, and he has merger talks with another company, should he tell the
employees until the merger talks are over? The woman says that, on the one hand, we should tell
them and give them time to find a new job, if they want to leave. But on the other, if too many
employees leave, the other company might pull out of the merger, thereby wiping out everybody’s
jobs. That’s the example of ethical dilemma. Every option has a damn side.

According to woman’s words, the definition of ethical communication says that we should give the
people the information they need. A person can make an informed decision or develop an informed
stance on an issue. On the one hand the employees’ job is in risk, but on the other, their job is their
secure and they don’t need to be looking for a change. In such a situation, one possible solution is
to share the information about the state of a company with employees and to tell that he is doing
everything to save their job. But the head of the company may ask the people to stay until the
merger talks will be ended (they can prepare a little). In this case people won’t be shocked if the
talks fail and they won’t have job any more.

The next step, according to the video, is to decide how to express bad news. “People shouldn’t
downplay negative information to avoid the emotional trauma”, says the woman. It’s important to
be sensitive to your audience’s emotions. The head of a company shouldn’t overstate persuasive
claims and resort to hype or puffery. A person should be able to support every claim he makes. “If
you’re creating something, don’t manipulate audiences though emotional coercion,” she says.
The final step is to evaluate the outcome of the messages and respond them as needed. For example,
if a person creates a dangerous product, he should assure that people understand how to use it. By
taking these four steps whenever we face with a communication dilemma we can be more confident
that we have taken all considering communication dilemmas into consideration and we’re
communicating in a way we feel our ethical responsibility.
