The game of basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith. A Canadian physical education professor
at International Young Men's Christian Association Training School (YMCA), in Springfield Massachusetts.
Dr. Naismith wanted to create a physical education program that could keep his class busy and fit even during
the long winter season. After rejecting several ideas which he thought were too rough or not suitable to be played in
indoor gymnasiums, he drafted the basic set of rules of the game. After which, he nailed a peach basket, with its bottom
still attached, Onto a 10-foot elevated track and the initial version of the game was born. soccer ball, which they used to
play this game back then, had to be retrieved every time a basket was made. This proved to be inefficient so eventually,
the bottom was removed.
The first official game was played in the YMCA gymnasium in Albany, New York, on January 20, 1892, with
nine players on each team. The game ended at a 1—0 score. By 1898, teams of five players became standard.
Frank Mahan, one of the players from the original first game, suggested "basketball" in early 1892 to name the
game Naismith invented.
The metal hoop with backboard was only introduced in 1906 to replace the peach basket.
It was only in the 1950s when dribbling became a major part of the game as ball manufacturing improved the
ball's shape and handling. It was yer also the time that Tony Hinkle, a renowned football and basketball coach ills that
time, introduced the use of the orange-colored ball for greater player and spectator visibility.
