1. Introduction
The Power Display Unit (PDU) is the on-site user interface part of the Power Control Unit (PCU)
BMP 171 001, which controls and supervises the ACTURA® power supply system. The PCU communicates
with the other units of the power supply system and manages functions such as alarm handling and load
sharing between the rectifiers. It can also communicate with the Emerson EnergyMaster system (EEM).
This document only describes how to use the display menus to view functions accessed from the PDU.
Users who are authorised to make changes by means of the web interface should refer also to the Software
Manual document 5/1553 BMP 171 001/1 Uen, which contains descriptions of settings requiring a PC and a
Web browser.
The PDU is located on the door of the power supply system main cabinet. It consists of a small side-lit liquid
crystal graphical display panel with touch screen buttons. Next to the display are three LEDs and there is an
internal buzzer for audible alarms.
The upper LED is red and lights if an A1 or A2 alarm occurs. The buzzer will also begin and continue to
sound until the display is touched by the user. The buzzer can be disabled during setting up (see item 4.12).
The middle LED is yellow and lights if an O1 (observation) alarm occurs, but the buzzer remains silent.
The lower LED is green and is lit while the PCU is receiving power.

A1 This is reserved for critical alarms, which are generated when there is a danger that the power
system may not be able to continue operating properly.
A2 Alarms given this category are not critical, but they can reduce the functionality of the power system.
O1 These are observation alarms which indicate special operating conditions that may be temporary,
and do not affect continued operation of the power system.
Five outgoing alarm relays provide general alarm signals that may be configured:
• by programmable logic circuits triggered from incoming alarms, internal alarms, or internal and incoming
alarms combined with each other in logical AND and OR functions.
• as Not used
All outgoing alarm signals can be blocked except the category O1 alarm signal.
When the outgoing alarms blocked function is active, a category O1 alarm is active.
The alarm inputs are definable as either active high or active low, and are voltage controlled:
3. Menu pages
If the “Alarm” button is active (visible), by pressing on it the display will go directly to the Active Alarm menu.
If the buzzer is turned off the text “Buzzer Disabled” will be displayed. If an alarm has occurred and the
buzzer is disabled (see item 4.12) then the alarm icon will still flash on and off (see item 4.1).
Pressing any of the arrow buttons on the Start Page will cause the first page of the Main Menu to appear.
When any of the Main Menu pages are being displayed, pressing the left arrow button will return the display
to the Start Page.

To choose one of the menu options, press on the text button showing the option, e.g. press “Alarm History”
on the screen to obtain the Alarm History sub-menu.
The up and down arrows can be used to move between the menu pages, and the left arrow button returns
the display to the Start Page.
Note that certain menu pages will ask for a password before any changes can be made. The use of these
protected pages is not described in this document. Authorised users should refer to the System Manual for
detailed instructions on the password-protected pages.

Figure 7. Active alarm displays; no alarms active (left), more than four active alarms (right).
The PDU can handle and list active alarms from all units connected to the signalling loop. If there are any
active alarms then they will be listed here, the alarm icon will flash on and off and the buzzer will sound
unless it has been disabled (see item 4.12). If there are more than four alarms, the maximum that the display
can show, the others can be seen by scrolling up or down with the arrow up/down keys.

Figure 8. Alarm History display, no alarms active (left), any alarm active (right).
The Alarm History is a record of alarms that has occurred but are no longer active. For each historical alarm
the date, time and type of alarm are shown, with the most recent at the top of the list. The alarm history is
able to hold information concerning the 200 most recent alarms.
If there is an active alarm present, the alarm icon will flash on and off and the buzzer will sound unless it has
been disabled (see item 4.12).
Select the voltage that is to be changed (Us, U1 or U2) by pressing the appropriate button on the display; Us
= system voltage, U1 = undervoltage alarm level with part load, U2 = undervoltage alarm level with no load.
The + and - buttons are then used to alter the voltage, in 0.1V increments. When the desired new voltage is
displayed, press APPLY. The new voltage is shown on the Confirmation display. Check that the voltages are
correct and then press either CONTINUE or the left arrow button to return to the Main Menu page.

Figure 17. Change Password display, including the change password sequence.
Important system parameters are protected against unauthorised changes by a four-digit password. On
installation there is no password, and the user should enter a suitable 4-digit number, using the Change
Password procedure. This will retain the authorised password until or unless it is changed at a later time.
During each session of using the PCD, once the password has been entered, no further requests for it will be
made.
Figure 18. Buzzer/LED Setting display including the buzzer disabling sequence.
The first option on this display is to disable the buzzer completely. If this is selected, after confirmation and
return to the Start Page the user will be reminded by a “Buzzer Disabled” text. The second and third options
can be used to selectively disable the buzzer. Selecting the “Buzzer disabled for O1” alarms option still
causes the buzzer to sound if an A1 or A2 alarm occurs. Similarly, selecting the “Buzzer disabled for A2/O1”
alarms option only permits the buzzer to sound if an A1 alarm occurs.
When “LED Test” is pressed, the red (A1/A2 alarm) and yellow (O1 alarm) LEDs should light to confirm that
they are serviceable.
Figure 19. Outgoing Alarms display including the A1/A2 alarm disabling sequence.
It is possible, by using the password to obtain correct authorisation, to disable the A1 and A2 alarms. If the
alarms are disabled, an O1 alarm is automatically generated, lighting the yellow LED at the side of the
display. A flashing warning triangle is also displayed at the bottom right corner of the display at all times
while the A1 and A2 alarms are disabled. A similar sequence is used to enable the A1 and A2 alarms after
they have been disabled.
ENABLE CONTINUE
If battery temperature sensors are implemented, the sensor alarm must be activated from this display.

Figure 21. Manual battery testing display including the start manual testing sequence.
Providing manual battery testing has been enabled on the Batteries > Test Setup Web page (see the
Software manual 5/1553-BMP 171 001/1 Uen), it is possible to start battery testing manually after using the
password to obtain correct authorisation. On confirmation that charging has started, an O1 alarm is
automatically generated, the yellow LED will light and the buzzer will sound. Pressing CONTINUE will then
return the display to the Main Menu page. Alternatively press the flashing alarm icon to see the Active
Alarm(s) page which shows the date and time when testing began. In both cases the buzzer will stop. If the
display is not touched for a further 3 minutes, the Start page will appear, with a “Manual testing” text
reminder.
Figure 22. Manual battery charging display including the start manual charging sequence.
Providing manual battery charging has been enabled on the Batteries > Charge Setup Web page (see the
Software manual 5/1553-BMP 171 001/1 Uen), it is possible to start battery charging manually after using the
password to obtain correct authorisation. On confirmation that charging has started, an O1 alarm is
automatically generated, the yellow LED will light and the buzzer will sound. Pressing CONTINUE will then
return the display to the Main Menu page. Alternatively press the flashing alarm icon to see the Active
Alarm(s) page which shows the date and time when charging began. In both cases the buzzer will stop. If the
display is not touched for a further 3 minutes, the Start page will appear, with a “Manual charging” text
reminder and the flashing alarm icon, because battery testing generates an O1 alarm.
Figure 23. Stop manual battery charging display including the stop manual charging sequence.
Once in progress, manual battery charging can be halted at any time by selecting “Manual charging” from the
Main Menu and pressing “STOP”. If more than 3 minutes have elapsed since manual charging began, you
will have to enter the password to obtain authorisation.
