What is it?
•A first impression is an event where a
person encounters someone else and
creates a mental image of that person
•It is what someone thinks of you
The importance of making a good first
impression
•The first impression with your students will define their respect for
you throughout the rest of your placement
•Did you know that people can formulate a judgment of you in less
than 20 seconds
•So from the first second the students meet you, you must gain their
trust and respect through a good first impression
•Think back to the time when you were in school. What were your
first impressions of some of the student teachers who taught you?
Tips for a great first impression
•Be authoritative but friendly
•Greet the students with a smile and look enthusiastic to be
there
•Appear confident
•Ensure to dress professionally
•Recall student’s names by the end of the lesson
•Dont be afraid of chit chat among students
How to incorporate
the "WOW Factor"
into your first
lesson
The WOW factor
The Wow factor is a way of getting your students interested in you from the get-
go and in the very first lesson.
This is achieved by:
1. Showcasing Letterfrack College - "GMIT Letterfrack is the National Centre for
Excellence in Furniture Design and Technology. Due to our reputation and
award-winning students, our graduates are highly sought after within the
industry and boast a 100% employment record upon graduation"
2. Showcase your own work from Letterfrack.
3. Showcase your interest in the subject and your own interests.

Interests
It's very important that you go into the classroom
showing that you're interested in being there.
Show your interest in the subject
If a student sees that your interest in the subject,
they will be motivated to be interested like you!
This creates a good working environment in the
classroom as they know that you are interested
and from this, they will engage massively in the
lessons
