Time Frame: 25-30 minutes / 10:00 – 10:30

Common Core Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.K.2.A Recognize and produce


rhyming words.

Objective: Students will recognize words that rhyme.

Assessment: Students will say yes or no if the word rhymes (formative). Students will
read about Dr. Seuss and write about how he uses rhyming words to help kids to learn
how to read. (summative).

Procedure:

Anticipatory Set: (hook: this should be 1-5 minutes. Some examples would be reading a
story, having students guess what is in your mystery box, completing a science
experiment and asking them why they think it bubbled over)

The teacher will complement the students on their special Dr. Seuss dress up day if they
participated. The teacher will ask the students if anyone was knows who Dr. Seuss is or
anything about him. (2 minutes)

Instructional Modeling: (you do the teaching: this should be the second biggest time
portion of your lesson. Here is where you do the teaching. Don’t want to spoon feed
students. Ask them questions like why? How? What do you think?)

The teacher will talk to the students about who Dr. Seuss is. The teacher will give a brief
presentation about him. The teacher will go over some of his books and themes that go
along with his books. The teacher will introduce rhyming to the students since that is a
main theme in his books. The teacher will present this video:

Student Engagement/Practice: (students are engaged: This is the biggest time portion
of your lesson. Here is where students are in centers, completing science labs, working
individually or in groups. You as the teacher are now walking around the room as a
facilitator guiding them)
The teacher will start an activity that is about rhyming. The teacher and students will
participate in a rhyming activity to introduce them to this topic. The students this week
will be able to listen to the teacher read some of his books. The students will raise their
hand if they can identify at least one rhyme in the story in the next few days. The teacher
will ask each student to share with the class two words the rhyme. Once one student
shares two words, the other students in the class can help come up with more words that
rhyme as a group.(10 minutes)

Closure: (closing the lesson: this should be 1-5 minutes. This is a re-cap of your
objective. Some examples would be reading a story and identifying the nouns, asking
them what is the difference between a gas, solid and liquid, etc …)

The teacher will go over how Dr. Seuss uses rhyming to help students learn. The teacher
will briefly go over their homework assignment that they are doing that night. The
teacher will end with some Dr. seuss facts or jokes. (3 minutes)

Instructional Accommodations: (If you do not have ELL students in your room, you

Highly Proficient Struggling Learners

Students can research more about Dr. Seuss Students have fun learning more about Dr. Seuss
