Beyond Publication

• Differentiate between invention and innovation.

“An invention may not always involve the commercialization of a new idea, it follows that not all inventions
result in innovation. Innovation should be seen as an interactive process of effectively creating, managing
and leveraging an invention and successfully taking a new product through to the marketplace.” John E.
Smith, Biotechnology.
• “True innovation has no peers. The peer review process stifle innovation. There is need for revolutionary
innovation rather than evolutionary one that we embraces in our institutions” – Tachi Yamada.
• “Intellectual property rights are designed to allow new technologies to be available, so that the originating
scientist or company receives a reward for the initiative demonstrated. Intellectual property assets can be
any codified knowledge, innovation or anything of actual or potential economic value that has arisen from
basic research, analysis and manipulation of biological systems, biological property, industrial application
or commercial use.” - John E. Smith, Biotechnology.
• Intellectual property (IP) is a category of property that includes intangible creations of the human
intellect, and primarily encompasses copyrights, patents and trademarks. It also includes other types of
right such as trade secrets, publicity rights and rights against unfair competition.
• Patent process: (1) Conduct prior art search, www.patent.google.com. (2) file application through
accredited body (patent registration in Nigeria; www.iponigeria.com). Patent validity period is 20 years
while trade secret has no limit, provided you keep it to yourself.
