Probability

1 Two balls are drawn without replacement from a bag of 8 balls, of which 3 are red,
2 are green and the rest are blue.

(i) Find the probability that no green balls are drawn.

(ii) Find the probability that one ball is red and the other is blue.

(iii) Let R be the event that the first ball drawn is red, and S be the event that
the second ball drawn is green. Are events R and S independent? Explain.

2 Six blank cards are taken and one is labelled ‘1’, two are labelled ‘3’, and three are labelled
‘5’.
(a) From the six cards, one is drawn at random. Find the probability that
(i) the number on the card is ‘1’,
(ii) the number on the card is ‘3’.

(b) The first card is replaced and a second card is drawn at random, find the
probability that the sum of the numbers on the two cards is 6.

(c) If the first card is not replaced and a second card is drawn at random, find the
probability that the sum of the numbers on the two cards is 6.

(d) If three cards are drawn at random without replacement, find the probability that
the sum of the numbers on the three cards is at least 10.

Q1(iii) No. [B1] The chance of the second ball drawn being a green ball depends on the first ball
drawn since the balls are drawn without replacement.
