Establishing Classroom Rules
● Give students a chance to come up rules that everyone will follow
in the classroom
● All for students to sign the rules they all agree on
● This gives students the opportunity to feel involved in how the
classroom will run and they are most likely to follow the rules
because they were the ones to set them up
● This doesn’t mean that teachers are excluded from making
classroom rules it just means students can feel in charge of their
own learning

● What do you need in order to be a successful student?

Positive Reinforcement
REINFORCE THE BEHAVIOR YOU WANT

Benefits of using positive reinforcement include:

- Minimal lost instructional time


- Increased student engagement
- Improved student confidence
- Positive classroom environment
- Increased motivation
“How” is more important than “What”
Having consequences can be great when
trying to control your class.
- The how is the most important part of
the consequences
- How it is executed rather than what the
consequences are
- Example:
- What is the consequence: Losing choice time
- How: Having warnings and the last step losing
choice time
- If choice time is lost right away the
child will lose the ability to make a
choice and have more a behavior issue.
Consequences
Logical consequences are related to the student’s behavior and student input is recommended
* Consequences need to match the circumstances of the problem *
GOAL: Help students develop internal controls and learn from mistakes.
Questions to consider:
1. What behavior is expected?
2. What problem is behavior creating?
3. What will help solve the problem ?

Implementation of Restorative Justice Practices: Involves participants in the conversation discussing


how it affected everyone and how they can make it right.
Consequences
P.E.P: This is non-confrontational communication with the student. The
teacher addresses the issue with the student privately, in a soft
voice, making eye contact when appropriate. This ensures the dignity
of the student.
Moreover, to ensure students are learning in an effective
environment, we will...
participate in community circles daily to build relationships and
practice communicating in positive ways.
keep UDL in mind by offering assignment options, flexible work
space, and providing meaningful, timely feedback to students.
Check-in

● Check-in with a teacher comes into play once the student has had more than one
verbal warning.
○ Having a check in, means we want to know why they are acting a certain way or why they are
“acting out”
○ Check-ins will help you get to know your student better
○ Check-ins will build on the student trusting you
○ Check-ins can be during the morning if we know the student has a hard time and we can set a goal
for the day, and then once again have a check-in at the end of the day to see how they did
■ Goals can be set if behavior is repeated
○ This check-in can answer questions the student may have
○ This will help with letting the students know their accomplishments or what they need to work on
○ Overall, check-ins will improve the students behavior
