A. Uses

The Simple Present can be used to refer to:

1. Habits/ everyday activities: I brush my


teeth every day.

2. Permanent states: I love my mom very


much.

3. General truths: The Earth goes around


the Sun.
B. Forms

1. Affirmative: S + V + s/es (third person


singular ONLY)
example:
I drink
You drink
He/ She/ It drinks tea.
We drink
You drink
They drink
2. Negative: S + DON’T/ DOESN’T (third
person singular ONLY) + V
example:
I don’t drink
You don’t drink
He/ She/ It doesn’t drink tea.
We don’t drink
You don’t drink
They don’t drink
3. Interrogative: DO/ DOES (third person
singular ONLY) + S + V?
example:
Do I drink
Do you drink
Does he/ she/ it drink tea?

C. Spelling rules for the third
person singular

1. General rule: verb + -s

Run - It runs Smile - It smiles

Read - He reads Write - He writes


2. Verbs ending in vowel + y =>
add -s

Play He plays

Pay He pays
3. Verbs ending in consonant +
y => change the y into i and add
-es

Study He studies

Cry He cries
4. Verbs ending –o –ss –sh –ch –x
=> add -es

Go She goes Watch He watches

Kiss She kisses Relax He relaxes

Wash He washes
D. Adverbs of Frequency
They tell us how frequently something
happens:
always (mereu) 100%
usually (de obicei) 75%
often (des) 50%
sometimes (câteodată) 25%
never (niciodată) 0%

They are used before the main verb,


but after the verb ”to be”.
Examples: He often flies to Paris.
He is sometimes late.
