Preschool at Home
TOP 10 TIPS

1 Follow a routine - You don't need a rigid schedule, but try

to follow the same rhythm every day that you are learning
at home. This will help your child know what to expect
and will help your day flow smoothly.

2 Include time to MOVE - Young children are not designed

to sit still for long stretches of time. Make sure you set
aside plenty of time to move and play during and in
between learning times.

3 Learn through play - Find fun hands-on ways to teach

your child. Maria Montessori said "What the hand does,
the mind remembers" and it is so true!

4 Read aloud every single day - Cuddle up in a cozy space.

Make silly voices. Read about topics your child enjoys.
Revisit the same favorites again and again.

Preschool at Home
TOP 10 TIPS

5 Read the pictures - Noticing and understanding the

details in the illustrations is the earliest form of reading
comprehension. It also builds confidence and
independent reading interest in young children.

6 Read nonfiction books too - Preschoolers love to read

about the real world. Choose subjects that interest your
child and let them read to learn more. Nonfiction also
expands their vocabulary and background knowledge.

7 Sing - There are songs for just about every subject

for this age. Singing helps your child remember
information. Plus, kids just love to sing!

Preschool at Home
TOP 10 TIPS

8 Focus on number sense - Your child doesn't need to learn

addition and subtraction at this age. Instead, they need a
strong foundation in number sense. This includes
concepts like more and less. As well as that the last
number said represents how many objects you have
counted and that the number 5 actually means 5 things.

9 Talk to other preschool at home moms - Learning at

home can be lonely! Connect with other families that are
doing the same.

10 Have a separate place to learn - It can be distracting for

your child to try to learn with all their toys around. It can
be very helpful to have a different space that is just
devoted to learning.
