1. The temperature in degrees Celsius on the surface of a metallic plate is given by the
function T ( x , y )=20−4 x 2− y 2 where “x” and “y” are in centimeters. A) In what direction
from point (2,-3) does the temperature increase faster? B) What is the maximum rate of
change of temperature increase? C) What is the rate of change in T in the direction of the
vector from point P (2,-3) to point Q (1,1)? D) Find the maxima, minima or saddle points of
the Temperature function. E) Obtain the graph of the function to verify the maximum
temperature point.
f ( x , y )=20−4 x 2− y 2

A)
∇ T ( x , y )=⟨−8 x ,−2 y ⟩
∇ T (2 ,−3)=⟨−8( 2) ,−2(−3)⟩→⟨−16,6⟩

T x =−8 x T y =−2 y
D) T xx =−8 T yy=−2
