DRAMA ANALYSIS: WOLF'S BRIDE

1) Characters
Reginleif/Natta is the main character of Wolf's Bride. A protagonist which has
braveness and power. Unfortunately, she couldn't kept her promises to Odin, to
not falling love to human. Regenleif in other way isThen, Aethelwulf/Bragi is next
protagonist. He is faithful in loving Reginleif but in one time he is too obedient to
his father while he could against it. That makes Judith become Aethelwulf's wife
(based on father's want)
Other protagonist are the valkyries. Different of Reginleif, Valkyries could
kept their promises to Odin to not falling love to human. But they are quite
arrogant. Beside them, there also other protagonist characters, just like the norn
(who writes the fate and have sensitive attitude) Judith, Idunn and Odin. The
function of these characters is to enliven the plotline.
Odin is special vehicle of playwright sending the message. We could see it in
last dialogue when he said, "It takes wintry days to build a warm family, sir." I
think Verdandi is another of special vehicle of the playwright's message, just like
when she said, "when everything is dark, we have to return to the only thing
darkness refuses to touch, heart."
In contrast to the characters mentioned above, there also antogonist character.
Suttungr is the main one. He is greedy and he is an avenger that willing to be
dominant. Baugi count as antagonist too since he help her brother, Suttungr, in
does the felony.
The Wolf's bride is belong to classical tragedy which has tragic flaw because
Reginleif actually won't take life of last vessels of Aethelwulf's but she then kill
him accidentally because the sounds of Aethelwulf's whistle. Reginleif decent to
get symphaty because her tragic love. She should kill the one she love and she
can't belong to him.
Character's development use various way but it mostly use dialogue. For
example when Hervor attempts to help Mist stand up. Mist say, "spare me your
pity, Hervor." We can imply that she is such a gruff which keep her high prestige.
Other way is by action. Hervor often stuterring, it show she is quite weak (easy to
unfocus).
2) Plot
Wolf's bride has 2 chapters, include prologue, 2 ACT, and epilogue. ACT I
with 4 scenes and ACT II with 3 scenes. The first scene in Act 1 is valkyries fight
to Baugi, they are fall down then Hrist call Reginleif but she feel disturb when
Baugi said that she is a wolf's bride. She took Baugi colon and reap his heart then
Mist behead Baugi.
The second scene of ACT I is in the norn's chamber involves Verdandi, Skuld,
Urd, Huginn, and Muninn. Fate suddenly change and urd accuse Skuld, Huginn,
and Muninn. Then they discuss about that fate-paradox. The third scene of first act
is Gunnlod begging Suttngr for meet Odin.
Odin is tricked by Huginn and Muninn to drink fake Mead of Wisdom and
they bring the real one for Gunnlod. Act 1 scene 4; The norn get solution by
release Judith from Hell Trio. Act 2 scene 1; in Midgard, valkyries get ready for
upcoming battle between Aesir and Jotuns. Act 2 scene 2; Suttngr against Mist.
Judith and Bjorg are appears. Reginleif kills Bjorg. The last scene is Reginleif
kills Aethelwulf. The progress of this story is reveals enough.
3) Setting
Setting of places are in village in the dining table of Bragi family, Battlefield,
The Norn's Chamber, Suttungr's court, Underworld (Nifhleim), Asgard, Valhala,
Midgard. The time doesn't really explained but we could imply it. Those change
of place and time doesn't weaken the story. In other word, it neccesary to give
different atmposhere but in a minor part of this drama, it goes unnaturally.
The setting contribute to theme and charcterization are seen in whole of story.
For example in prologue, we can image that they having conversation in dining
room. Setting is important to the play to build image among the readers.
4) Theme
Theme of this drama is tragic fate of a mate and their inability to unite. The
moral and human significance is about true love and war that has universal
significance cause love its self is multi-meaning and sometime it need to sacrifice.
Theme, plot, and characters of this drama are reflects it. It stimulate love problem
in real life. In order it's mostly answer by implication. One of direct statemenet;
when everything is dark, we have to return to the only thing darkness refuses to
touch, heart.
Dramatist doesn't clearly reveal the over-all view of the universe and he view
it in romantic, fighting, humanist, and humor. The dramatist doesn't leave the
conclusion up to the readers. But it is using devices to help readers find thr
conclusion out by the story and conflicts.
5) Language
If the play is written verse, it might would be a classic novella/novel but the
dramtist probably hampered in language since there major different between them,
unless he/she has ability to convert it. The language, based on my opinion, it
doesn't totally elevated of real life. Language use some old english which use
rarely in real life. But it contribute significantly to the enjoyment of the play. It
give us such a classic atmosphere and it what artistic is.
Some language especially adapted to some characters also something nice that
help charaterize. Just like special language of Huginn, Muninn, Skuld, Verdandi,
and Valkyries. Huginn with her smile before talk, Munnin with her sigh before
talk, Verdandi that has spoiled language and girlish language of Skuld.
6) General
The genre of this drama is tragedy since both main characters doesn't belong
to each other. From deepest of my heart, I wouldn't read this for a second even
third. I prefer read other kind of fiction especially Indonesian short story because
in honest, I more enjoy it than this. But the situation makes me and it doesn't
matter. Altough so, I don't say that the story is bad. It's totally amazing. Those
only my personal opinion.
