A Slander by

Anton Chekhov
1. What lesson can be picked up in the story?
-The lesson that is trying to portray is being paranoid
will only do you harm. It is better to settle slanders or
problems professionally because it avoids drama and
further complications.

2. How can we learn from the mistakes of the

main character?

-We can learn from his mistakes that we should first

confront/question the person before accusing them of
false accusation.

3. How does the dialogue in the story contribute to

its overall tone? In turn, what does the tone do for
the story?
-It contributes to the flow of the story. It helps the
reader imagine the scene of the story clearer.
4. In the end, the story asks who might have spread the slander
about Ahineev, if it wasn’t Vankin. Does the story implicitly show
who the culprit is? Support your answer with evidence from the text.

-There is a possibility that the culprit may be Ahineev’s wife. She

got a hold of the gossip, and she was furious when she heard this
false gossip. So when her husband got home and was having dinner,
his wife confronted him and slapped him. It may also be a Mohammedan
because the gossip reached Ahineev’s wife thanking a Mohammedan that
they told the truth to her even though it is only a false
accusation. Moralism:
The moralism that was showed in the story is that
situational irony because no matter how hard the main
character does people still think he has an affair
with the cook. The moral that can be gotten here is
that if we believe that we are indeed innocent than we
shouldn’t act like we are the ones at fault. It only
affects peoples believes and peoples judgement towards
us.

Two Little Soldiers by Guy de
Maupassant
1. What overall theme(s) does the short story convey?
-It is showing us how a betrayal can be felt even though it is not intentional because they didn’t know
or they have no intentions of doing something upsetting.

2. How does the author highlight the change in Luc and Jean’s relationship before and after the arrival of
the dairy maid? Support your answer with lines from the text.
-At the beginning of the story, it is shown how close the bond between Luc and Jean is and how they
would go to a village together and feel the warmth of home their longing for. But as they meet a dairy
girl they both were interested in her. After meeting her they started seeing her every Sunday. Jean
was first shown how he admired the dairy girl meanwhile Luc also admired the girl and it is mentioned
he requested leave. And what Jean didn’t know he may or may not have confessed his love to the girl
or courted the girl. And because of this, it is said in the story that, “Poor Jean was dazed, so dazed that
he could not understand. His mind was upset and his heartbroken, without his even realizing why.”

3. What is the significance of the setting in the story, especially in relation to the two protagonists?
-It shows how a home can be important to one person and how they value it. The setting is something
not luxurious yet it gives the soldiers a priceless feeling which is the reason they keep on going back
to the same place.

4. In what crucial way are Luc and Jean different from each other, which caused the milkmaid to
fall more in love with Luc?
-Luc gives us the impression that he is sociable, outgoing, and the way how he shows his love to his
loved ones is he’ll go all out for them. Meanwhile, Jean is shy, he worries too much about his loved
ones, and he is very giving even though he too was in love with the dairy girl he decided to just suffer
silently.

5. Silence is an important theme in both “The Piece of String” and “Two Little Soldiers.” Compare
and contrast how it is used in both short stories to drive different points home.
-The theme of silence is shown in both stories but portrayed in different ways. For example, the story
“The piece of string” is portraying how the main character doesn’t stay silent about the justice
judgment of people. Meanwhile in “Two little soldiers”, Jean being silent about his feelings made he fell
into complete sadness.

Moralism:
The narrative depicts a paradoxical
circumstance. The lesson of the tale is
that no matter how difficult the situation
or how much sadness you are experiencing,
it is always preferable to tell a friend
about it.
A Troublesome Visitor by
Anton Chekhov
1. Why is the hunter considered the “troublesome visitor”? How does he trouble the forester?
-Besides holding a firearm, the hunter was nasty to the forester, who ignored his wish to
assist the lady. He also attempted but failed to rob the hunter of his money. To put it simply,
the hunter's manner is too much for the forester to bear.

2. Consider this line from the hunter: “However you punish, whether it is with flogging or
anything else, it will be no good, you will not knock the wickedness out of a wicked man.”
Explain the words of the hunter. If punishment is no good, how else can wickedness be
addressed according to the hunter?
-Evil is like a bit of skin: once it's there, it's difficult to get rid of. It will leave a mark on your
spirit and intellect, attempting to make you stronger and darker. It aims to further demolish
your mind and redirect you to the exact meaning of evil. Instead of being eliminated by a
marathon of whips or a wave of curses, it will expand until the host is entirely wicked.

3. What is the significance of the image of the hunter’s dog troubling the forester’s cat, as well
as their discussion about their pets?
-They saw a parallel between the topic of their pets and the scenario in which the powerful
have everything and the weak have nothing. The strong had food, but the poor were
plundered both by food and money.

4. Compare Artyom’s words and beliefs at the start of the story with his actions as the story
progresses. What lesson does the author wish to impart through Artyom’s character?
-His actions at the end of the story are reasonable. Her life was difficult at the time, and I
believe she was afraid that if she involved with other people's affairs, something horrible
might happen to her. He was terrified and refused to allow anything happen to him in that
manner.

5. How does the setting contribute to the theme of the short story?
-The accurate use of tale visuals helps readers to envision the scenario. There is inequality
and a want to live in the tale, thus employing imagery not only gives you an idea of what the
story is and the atmosphere in the story, but it also aids in comprehending the storyline.

Moralism:
The tale exemplifies situational irony. The moral
of the story is that everyone has a dark side. And
because they are poor and have no money to buy
food, they have no choice but to do horrible
things in order to survive in this world.
