Performance Task: Feminism and Historical Story Analyses

Read the following stories and answer the questions that follow.

A Slander by Anton Chekhov


Feminism Approach: In this story, the female was portrayed by Ahineev as she was at
fault and was even discriminated against. Meanwhile, Ahineev is shown where Ahineev
is being decisive, rational, and resolute. And he dislikes people gossiping about him in
false pieces of information.

Historical Approach: This story dates back to the time where Russian society between
classes is important, resulting in Chekhov highlighting this information in the story.

A Troublesome Visitor by Anton Chekhov


Feminism Approach: The lady that was mentioned in the story was portrayed as if she
was vulnerable and fragile. And as of the male character was seen as brave, powerful,
and praise-worthy, and lastly, Artyom was viewed as a narcissist and sarcastic.

Historical Approach: The events that was escalating in the time where Anton Chekhov
was writing this story is when the Russian Empire is expanding on 1886, which reflects
on the situational irony.

The Piece of String by Guy de Maupassant
Feminism Approach: The main character was seen in this story as helpless and was
oppressed even though the evidence that he stole was vulnerable they still accused him
until the guilty has shown them that he/she indeed took the pocketbook. But even so,
people still doubted him even though he constantly fights for his innocence.

Historical Approach: This tale was published in 1883 was first published in French
called “La Ficelle”. This was portrayed as to everyone’s everyday life.

Two Little Soldiers by Guy de Maupassant
Feminism Approach: The character was first shown in the two soldiers is Luc where he
was portrayed as outgoing and decisive meanwhile Jean is timid and the dairy girl also
shows nurturing and sweetness. The Feminism Ideology that was shown is that men
can be emotional and dramatic at times.

Historical Approach: Most of Guy de Maupassant’s stories are set during the war
because of the time he spent during the army. In this story, the author made apparent
that the homesickness of the two soldiers caused their yearning for the search for love
or someone to be with, sometimes blinding their concern for their comrade.

Feminism Approach: The narrative displays Pavel looking down on others, particularly
Mme, a woman who idolizes him. In the story, women were also presented as gentle
and submissive.

Historical Approach: The text was published in the late 1800s, throughout a period when
literature was quickly developing and a growing number of people were becoming
interested in the subject.
