Back Pressure Test

Back Pressure Test Requirements

To date Farris has conducted back pressure testing on 1” and smaller threaded valves which is not a re-
quirement of ASME code. ASME Section VIII, Division I UG-136(d)(3) states:
The secondary pressure zone of each closed bonnet pressure relief valve exceeding NPS 1 (DN 25) inlet
size when such pressure relief valves are designed for discharge to a closed system shall be tested with
air or other gas at a pressure of at least 30 psi (200 kPa). Parts subjected to pressure testing shall not ex-
hibit a sign of leakage.

Therefore, effective immediately, Farris will no longer conduct back pressure tests on threaded valves with
inlet sizes of 1” and smaller. This will included flanged 2700 series valves.

Should you require this testing on said valves, it must be detailed in the purchase order as a special re-
quirement to conduct this testing. The valve model number will then have an SP for special construction.
If there is no indication of this requirement, Farris will proceed as indicated above.

Please note that some customer specifications do require back pressure testing on threaded valves with
inlet sizes of 1” and smaller. Shell specification MESC SPE 77/135 and ISO 4126, are a couple of exam-
ples of such specifications. Be sure to review any customer specifications in detail and call out any spe-
cial testing or requirements as needed in order to comply.
