Word Meaning

1. Lexical meaning is the meaning of a base or root word without considering any prefix or
suffix which may be attached.
2. Entailment is the relationship between two sentences where the truth of one (A) requires
the truth of other (B).
3. Collocation refers to pair or set of words that are commonly put together such as break a
habit, break a leg, break a promise, break a record and etc.
4. Idiom is a common word or phrase which means something different from its literal
meaning but can be understood because their popular use. the example is like beauty is in
the eye of the beholder ( what looks beautiful to one person may not look beautiful to
another).
5. Homonymy is the relationship between words with identical forms but different
meanings. Some example such as lead (the metal) and lead (which attaches to a dog’s
collar), pike ( the fish) and pike ( the weapon)
6. Polysemy refers to the quality of some words to have several related meanings. For
example, “my head hurts”, “he heads the news section”. The word “head” has different
meaning. The meaning is based on the context in that sentence,
7. Synonym is phonological words which have the same or very similar meanings such as
couch/sofa, boy/lad, large/big.
8. Antonym is a word that has opposite meaning of another word. The example such as bad
x good, lazy x diligent and etc
9. Hyponym is a classification of meaning of more general world. The example is fruits.
There are so many kinds of fruits such as apple, grape, banana and etc. Those types of
fruits called as hyponym.
10. Meronymy is a term that used to describe a part-whole relationship between lexical items.
