INTRODUCTION
Technology nowadays is really important in the life especially in education. Technology
has provided a lot of information that could be gained easily. Besides, it helps teacher and
student learn not only face to face, but it serves the learner to study for distance learning.
The usage of technology in the learning process has a high effect for the learners. Khan in
2005 stated that delivering the information via technology will improve the teacher to
design the classroom management, more student-centered, the learning will be more
interactive, efficient and more flexible. Online learning is on of beneficial way to make
the learning and teaching is more attractive to make students interested in the learning
activity. In the online learning, varieties media can be used such as Web-Based
Multimedia, virtual classrooms and etc. Even social media also can be used a s the tool
for example, Facebook, Twitter, Line and there are some many others technology that can
be used in online class teaching. The usage of online learning gives significant benefits
both for teacher and students. In this case, students can study independently without
learning with the teacher in the class. They can learn anytime and anywhere. The success
of implementing online learning in delivering material is not only about student’s
readiness in using the technology used. Students’ attitudes also plays important thing.
Students give positive attitudes toward online learning in their learning activity.
(Sandercock & Shaw, 2000). Additionally, perception about the usage or advantages of
online learning also important. Perception is a process of being aware of events out of our
environment. Teachers’ and students’ perception is also important in online learning. By
knowing their perception, the government can used it to increase the quality of online
learning especially for teaching and learning tool. Previous study has investigated that
online learning has no effect on student’s achievement. Student are not interested in
learning via online and they are not motivated of online learning. Therefore, the recent
study is to investigate teachers’ and student’ perception toward online learning in SMAK
Santo Paulus Singaraja.

METHOD
The research was conducted in SMAK Santo Paulus Singaraja. The participants were 10
selected students which were 5 male and 5 female in 3 rd grade who have experienced
online learning in the previous grade and 5 teachers who have conducted online learning.
In determining teachers’ and students’ the method used in interview. In this case, the
participants were divided into several groups. This method was used because it was
impossible that the researcher conducting an interview one by one to them.
For students, they were divided into groups according to the gender and readiness
(interesting, mastering in using the technology, motivation) to the online learning. The
obtained data were distributed as in the table 1.

Table 1. Students participants based on

gender and readiness

Gender Category
Male Low Readiness 0
High Readiness 5
Female Low Readiness 1
High Readiness 4

For teachers, they were divided according to gender and readiness. The obtained data
were shown in the table 2.

Table 1. Teachers participants based on

gender and readiness

Gender Category
Male Low Readiness 0
High Readiness 3
Female Low Readiness 0
High Readiness 2

Conclusively, there were four groups interview. The male and female groups were
interviewed in a different time. Each group was interviewed for less more 20 minutes, so
in total researcher done the interview for 80 minutes. Each group would definitely gave a
different informations. The diversity would made varieties data that could be concluded
by researcher to explore teachers’ and students’ perception to the online learning as
mentioned in the introduction. From the data obtained, the differences and similarities(if
any) among those different group would be compared to make the final result.

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Online learning improves students’writing and listening skills

After the research conducted, the obtained data shown online learning gave several
benefits both for teachers and students. In general, the participants extremely emphasized
the advantages of online learning especially for listening and writing. The participants
viewed that through online learning, they could develop the writing and listening ability.
As the comments shared from the male students regarding to the strength of online
learning to improve their writing skill.
Writing is one of four skills in learning English. Writing belongs to productive skills
because through writing we can produce or create something exist in our mind.
When teachers ask students to write something or comments, teachers and others
students will be able to see their friend’s work. In this case, one students can give
comments to another toward the sentences, the grammar, vocabulary and other
elements that known by their peers.

The statements above clearly describes that online learning is a beneficial tool to increase
students’ writing ability especially associating to the peer’s assessment. The onsite
learning that has provided a textbook might be seemed did not improve students’ skill in
learning English language communicatively. Others statements also shared by the female
students concerning on the same contexts as follows:
We truly enjoy writing while online learning. We can write independently without
4
any forces or feels shy to other friends. After writing, we are able to know what
strengths or weaknesses of our writing, because our friends will directly assess and
comments something that need to be improved better.
This quotation extremely shows that students are independent to write what idea they
have in their brain. They explains that they do not to be shy and afraid to express their
opinions through writing. Another students also get a chance to give opinions or feedback
to their friend’s work. The female group also commented focusing on the listening skills
as following:
Online learning teacher may provides such a video and audio that could be watch
and listened by students to find out some informations. For students with weak
listening skill, they can practice it by watching the video and listening to audio
provided.
From the statements above, students feels that online learning is very useful in improving
students’ listening because they are provided videos and audios that can be an equipments
to train their listening.
On other hand, a female students stated there was a significants effect of online learning.
In my point of view, online learning does’not affect me. Honestly, I don’t like it.
Better I learn in class.
The above student might be has a lack interesting toward technology. He saw that
traditional learning is better. Overall, students give positive perception to the useful of
online learning especially to improve student’s writing and listening skills.

Online learning in promoting students’ independent learning

Besides, teachers also viewed online learning has a great potential to give an opportunity
to the students to learn independently. After the interviews, the male teachers suggested
that:
Each students have different way in learning English language. In online learning,
they can learn in what way they like.
The statement above explains that online learning provides different learning style. As
Kinsella 1995:171 explains ‘styles’ is more generally as being more individually in
gaining, processing a new information and skills. One male student also commented on
5
the same thing as explained as follows:
I am able to get so many information in the online learning. Besides, those are easily
to be accessed.
From that statement, it clearly illustrated that students are provided a lot of
informations. Students do not need to be in the classroom with the absence of the teacher
to gain a relevant informations in the same context.

CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

The main purpose of this study is to examine teachers’ and students’ perception toward
online learning in SMAK Santo Paulus Singaraja. According to the result obtained from
the interviews, online learning give a significant advantages to improve students’ writing
and listening skills. In the online learning students enjoy and write independently
whatever they want. They could express their idea by doing online writing. In the online
learning, they will get comments or feedback from teachers or classmates directly about
student’s individual work. On other hand, listening skill also can be increased. Teacher
may provides video or audio to create a more meaningful learning. Students will be
clearly understand and comprehend the material. Through the video and audio, they can
train their listening skill to be better. However, one students express there is no influences
of online learning to his/her learning outcomes. He/she preferred traditional class than
learning in online. The factor caused this problem might be student has a low
motivation/interesting to te development of technology. The student has a lack knowledge
about the useful of technology to facilitate learning activities. Online learning is also
challenge students to be an independent learner. As stated by male teachers above, each
individual student has a different style in learning language. Learning style brings an
important role to the students in achieving learning outcomes. Therefore in the online
learning, students are taught to learn independent as possible. A varieties learning
materials are also provided where students can access those informations easily. In
Indonesia, the usage of online learning in teaching and learning activity still not effective.
There are some factors if this problem such as teacher has lack knowledge regarding to
the use of technology, low motivation of the students, incomplete facility of the school
and so many others that makes online learning can not run as well. The suggestion is that
6
the government should improve the facilities in the school so online learning can run as
well, teachers also provided workshop about the use of technology so that teacher are not
left behind in suing technology in the learning and teaching activity.
