USING ONLINE WEB LEARN ENGLISH TO IMPROVE READING

COMPREHENSION

(A CLASSROOM ACTION RESEARCH)

INTRODUCTION

Reading is one of the most important English skills for listening, speaking, and writing.
Read about the skills that are said to be the most important four skills for teaching purposes,
especially in English as a second or foreign language A student receives as much information as
he reads. reading is the ability to draw meaning to the printed page, then verify it information
correctly. Based on the facts and experience of the researcher facts on the ground. There are
several of them in the process of teaching and learning problems that students encounter in
learning English. When students learn English First, they have low reading skills, so most of
them are incomplete song lyrics Two students read the long text slowly. Finally, students always
complains that it takes very little time to understand the text.

The researcher made observations about it place, what obstacles or problems exist and no
one has investigated. That's it through observation, the researcher, among other things, obtained
information about contextuality Online learning materials literally improve students' reading
skills understanding Therefore, the data is valid for solving and the problems cannot be ignored,
the researcher must do this research to be more specific the researcher wants to give a solution to
a problem or constraint. Therefore the researcher wanted and chose a place SMP AL HUSNA to
solve and introduce the context method Online learning materials to improve students' verbatim
reading skills and we believe that this method can improve.

Based on the 2013 junior high school curriculum, it is anticipated that by the time they
are in high school, the goal of reading comprehension will be for them to understand the text. In
order to make the information accessible, the readers must understand the text. Most of the
patterns discovered in Junior High are related to the difficulties the students have in interpreting
and comprehending texts. The research by Pan and Wu (2013) also argues that the traditional
methods of teaching reading comprehension are still heavily relied on in English as a Foreign
Language (EFL) learning contexts. Centered lecturing is used in large lectures to encourage
student reading. Using the reading course, with text explanation, vocabulary illustration,
grammar instruction, and intensive drills on language forms, the teachers apply the reading
course to their students. Students in EFL classrooms frequently find their lessons mundane and
meaningless due to teachers who dominate the language learning, who also make passive
learners, instead of helping students become more autonomous learners (Ratnasari, Hikmawati,
& Ghifari, 2019). The integration of technology becomes a necessity in education to meet the
requirements of 21st century learning by using an online learning platform.

A huge collection of information is just a fingertip away, now that so many students are
immersed in technology (Egbert, 2009). Additionally, the pedagogy community believes that
technology integration is important, as it promotes the school's overall success. Nonetheless,
there are a significant number of teachers who refuse to adapt, and many students are unwilling
to try. Access to the world's information is available from a number of devices in the modern
information era. Prior to the 21st century, expensive technology was only accessible to a select
few. As of the 21st century, technology has gotten much cheaper (Edwards, 2009; in Francis,
2017, p. 1). Students have grown up with technology being thrust upon them, and teachers must
find new ways to teach students who have grown up immersed in it. Teachers who live in this
new age will have to find creative ways to use these new forms of technology in both the
motivational and instructional levels of their lessons. So the school needs to integrate innovative
media and technology. Learn English kids british council is an online learning platform that
function as a media.

Learn English Kids is brought to you by the British Council, the world's English teaching
experts. That have lots of free online games, songs, stories and activities for children. For
parents, they have articles on supporting children in learning English, videos on using English at
home and information about English courses for your child. Learn English by british council has
some feature that very noticeable and provides students answer pace to appear on each student
screen, so they can answer question ar their own pace and review their answer at the end. It helps
students learning motivation, activities involvement and academic achievement.

Research method

Setting

This classroom action research was conducted at seventh grade, Al Husna junior high school
Tangerang at English lesson class. The total number of students was 20 students, but during the
implementation of the treatment the number of students present was 15. This research was done
in 2 cycles in order to find out the bet way to improve the students’ writing skill by using online
web called Learn English Kids.

Preparation for the Action Research

The basic competency that is the focus of this classroom action research is reading
comprehension competence. Preparation for action is to prepare appropriate reading texts on the
learningenglishkids website. Sources of data for this study include the results of interviews with
teachers and students.

Technique and Instruments of Collecting Data

Technique

Data collection techniques in this classroom action research are: (a) Interview: to find out
students' difficulties in learning; (b) Observation: to find out student participation during the use
of the learnenglishkids website in teaching reading; (c) Test: to find out students' understanding
and scores.

Instrument

The instruments used in collecting data in this classroom action research were: (a) Structured
interviews: to find out students' difficulties in reading; (b) Observation list: used when observing
student participation during the use of the learnenglishkids website in teaching reading; (c) Test
results: to find out the success rate of using the learnenglishkids website in teaching reading
comprehension; (d) Results of discussions between team members.

Procedures of the Research

Cycle 1

The first cycle of this classroom based research consist of planning, acting, observation
and reflecting.

a. Planning

1. Analyzing the curriculum especially the basic competence after doing the need analysis of the
students.

2. Make a lesson plan about using online web learn English in teaching with read some short
story and answer the test

3. Classroom management: number of students 20, make the classroom comfortable

4. Prepare the test.

5. Making the instruments which used in cycle of classroom action research.

b. Acting

During the action we asked the students to divided into 4 groups. The teacher asks students to
read a short story from the online web and understand the short story. Then we asked to do peer
evaluation, then finally we came to the discussion part. We discussed about the errors that they
found in the peer evaluation process. Then, we gave suggestions and the correct ways in
pronouncing some words. After that Students discuss and share assignments to find the answer
needed to solve the test.

c. Observation Things to be observed including: situation of learning and teaching process;


students’ participation; and students’ performance in peer evaluation and discussion.

d. Reflecting

This classroom action research is success if some of the following requirement are fulfilled:
1. Most of the students (75%) Ini berapa persen ya? have a good participation during the
acting.

2. Most of the students have a good score in evaluation (70). Ini jg berapa persen ya?

3. Most of the students active in peer evaluation and discussion.

Cycle II

Like at the first cycle, in the second cycle also consisted of planning, acting, observation,
and reflecting.

a. Planning: The research team, made a lesson plan based on the result of reflection in the first
cycle.

b. Acting: The research did the teaching by using online web learn English in teaching based on
the planning in the second cycle.

c. Observation: The research team (teacher and collaborator) did the observation through the
learning by using online web learn English in teaching.

d. Reflecting: The research team did the reflection toward the second cycle then made analysis
and conclusion about the implementation of teaching reading by using online web learn English
in improving the students’ ability in reading .

Findings and Discussion

The findings of the research were explained in cycles of learning and teaching process. In
this case, there were 2 cycles as follows:

Cycle I

a. Planning

In the planning, the team analyzed the curriculum especially the basic competence. Then, make a
lesson plan about the use of using online web learn English in teaching to improve reading skill.
In classroom management, number of students is 20, to make the classroom comfortable.
Following the preparation of the test, making the instruments which used in cycle of classroom
action research.

b. Acting

In this first cycle, the implementation was not suitable with the planning. This is because of some
causes. First, most of the students were still not familiar with the using online web learn English
activity. Second, most of the students didn’t have a brave to be active in peer evaluation. Last,
some students didn’t understand how to pronounce some words.
