CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of Research

In Indonesia, the term of e-learning or online class may sound a little strange
to the some people's ears, but since the world has been hit by the Covid-19 outbreak,
the term of online class has been surfaced. Online class is a class that was done
remotely, using a lot of advanced technology as a medium and also a way to carry out
the teaching and learning process.

Nowadays, science and technology are developing rapidly. This development


has the impact of the increasing openness and distribution of information and
knowledge, and from all over the world across the boundaries of distance, place,
space and time. It is influenced also extends to various levels, including the field of
education. Therefore, the Indonesian’s government decided to continue learning
process that was carry out with online system that is study from home.

Because of that, the reseearcher interested to know what the students


experience during studying with this online class systems.

Experience is something that someone gets after doing something, that will be
affect to their several aspects of life, like the knowledge, behavior, feelings and
interests. Basically, experience can be obtained from anywhere and anything. For
example, someone will get the experience from the smallest thing, just like to know
the meaning of Good Morning from the children’s English book.

According to Kotler experience is learning that affects changes in a person's


behavior. Meanwhile, Irawan and Farid suggest that experience is a learning process
that affects changes in an individual's behavior. It means, experience is a lesson that
someone’s get in their life, which this experience will also affect to their behavior.

Experience is something that can affect many aspects of a person's life, both of
knowledge and affection. However, experience can also affect to the person’s
perspective in all matters, including on learning, therefore the term of "Learning
Experience" emerged, which of course that is happens to the students.
Learning experience is an experience that students get after completing a
lesson. In other words, this experience will affect students in the field of knowledge,
interests and students' perceptions about a subject. In this research, the researcher will
focus on students' experience of learning English.

New technologies have dramatically multiplied and diversified the ways in


which students can learn from and interact with educators, in addition to the level of
independence students may have when learning. Students can email, chat, or have
video conversations with teachers, and the students can use online course-
management systems to organize and exchange learning materials.

The use of technology in the learning system gives rise to electronic-based


learning as a result of technology. One of the technology applications is information
and communication technology. Information and communication technology-based
learning will run effectively if the teacher's role in learning is as a learning facilitator
or makes it easy for learners to learn not only as a provider of information. Teachers
are not the only source of information presented. Teachers not only teach transfer of
knowledge, but also can learn from the learners.

The learning process by utilizing information and communication technology


is guidance from the teacher to facilitate effective learning. Teachers provide
maximum opportunities and create conditions for learners to develop teacher’s own
learning methods according to teacher’s characteristics, needs, talents, or interests.

Information and communication technology has an important role in life now


and in the future, including in the field of education. The development of information
and communication technology in education has triggered a shift from conventional
face-to-face learning towards distance learning that can be accessed using media, such
as computers, multimedia and the internet without being limited by distance, place
and time.

However, behind all of the good things about technology arise some problems
that are felt by students, considering that the way learning system is something new
for students.
Based on preliminary research by doing the interview on whatsApp chatting
with three students from SMAN 1 MANDAH on December, 30 2020 the researcher
got the problems.

The researcher assumes that the students’ problems are the students think that
English is difficult to learn by themselves. Especially with the lack of students
understanding of the material, difficulty of pronounce and know the meaning of
English word, the students feels that online class is not good enough, and online class
make the students’ grades are drop.

Based on the background of the research above, this research will describe
about students’ experiences of studying English in an online class. So, the researcher
wants to do the research under the title “Students' Experience of Learning English
in Online Class at SMAN 1 MANDAH".

B. Identification of the Research

Based on the background of the problems above, the researcher found three
problems that can be identified:

1. The lack of students’ understanding of the materials of English at SMAN 1


Mandah.
2. The students feels confused to pronounce and difficult to get the meaning of the
English word.
3. The students thought that English is the difficult subject to learn by themselves at
home.
C. Limitation of the Research

Based on the identification of the problems above, the researcher will limit the
students’ experience if learning English in online class at SMAN 1 Mandah.

D. Formulation of Research

Based on the limitations of the problem above, the problem to studied is


formulated into the following questions:
1. What is the level of the students’ experience of learning English in online class at
SMAN 1 Mandah?

E. Purpose of the Research

Based on the formulations there is a purpose of this research is:

1. To find out the level of the students’ experience of learning English in online class
at SMAN 1 Mandah.

F. Significance of the Research

The researcher hopes that the research finding will give the contribution to:

1. For the students, do not be afraid, because English is very fun to learn. So, the
students have to change the bad perceptions about English.
2. For the teacher, the researcher think that when teaching English with online
system, the teacher should be more varied and do not do the monotonous way in
teaching.
3. For the researcher, hopefully this research will be the encouragement inside of
heart and mind to make something better than before when teaching.
4. For other researcher, this research is having many deficiencies. So, for the other
researcher can do other ways to make the research better.

G. Definition of the Key Term


1. Experience is something that someone gets after doing something, where the
experience gained will be affect a person in several aspects, both in knowledge,
behavior, feelings, also interests.
2. Learning experience is not the same as the content with which a course deals nor
the activities performed by the teacher. The term learning experience refers to the
interaction between the learner and the external conditions in the environment to
which students can react. Learning experience is focus on what students get after
learning about something, not what the teacher does.
3. Online class or e-learning is learning that carried out remotely by using series of
instructional experiences using digital network to interact, learn and discuss. This
distance learning can use many available media, such as email, video call, chat,
zoom and so on.
