Volpone as a Divine Justice

Volpone is a wonderful novel written by Ben Jonson. So, it


is a comedy of the love of money, which corrupts people.
However, God will save virtuous and honest people, and will
punish all the guilty ones.
Acknowledge for the sake of argument, after Voltore tells
the truth that Celia and Bonario are innocents, the judge
decides to punish those guilty people. Thus, Volpone’s wealth
is taken away. Mosca and Volpone are sent to prison and
Corvino is ordered to wear a hat with long doings ear. This
punishment suits him because he had sold away his wife.
Voltore is also punished because he did not act up to the
expectations of his office. He is dismissed from his office as a
lawyer. Corbaccio is also punished by giving all his wealth to
his son.
Consequently, in contrast to these punishments, Celia is
rewarded by being given all her dowry. So, she is sent to her
parents’ house because Corvino is not a proper husband for
her. Also, Bonario is rewarded because he gets all his father’s
wealth. Finally, the experience of Celia emphasizes that the
play is a comedy of divine justice.
As a whole, through this novel we can see that these
punishments and these rewards emphasize that Volpone is a
comedy of divine justice. This play teaches moral lessons to
the readers or the audiences. In general, as to say, everyone has
been rewarded or punished in this novel in order to pave the
way to the important lessons of morality.
